Hey guys sorry I have been away but as you probably know i'm at university/college and have had a lot of work on so not been able to play poker. Also being a student I was abit struck for cash so had to get a job to earn some money. However im bored of this job now and want to play poker again which is lucky because I now have 6 weeks off for christmas which is a nice break but i need to earn money in this time.

Jagsti introduced me to match betting which is cool and I may try and earn money from that. However I was playing 5NL and doing well, i need to try and earn around £50+/$100 a week for me.

so my advice needed is do i continue to just work as a waiter, or do i match bet or do i start playing poker again to earn cash??

Please help me out as I am really unsure what to do here, please give detailed feedbacks if you think poker such as hands per month or week and do i need to move up limits first, is it a bad idea or whatever your thoughts are.

Regards
Jake

do the job waiting as a base income, something that is tangible, solid and reliable whilst playing poker in ur spare time. if u NEED the money, then u wont play ur 'a-game', as url always be worried about losing this weeks takings or income.

If you think your game is good enough try a sunday million at pokerstars. its like 215 to buy in but if you place within like 20% of the total entrees you will make around 3k+. How my friend has been supporting himself through college he only play that one tourney a week and is doing fine lol.

Is £200/£400 a month going to sustain you? You also said 'try and earn' which means you might not even make £100 a week, it might be less. Then what?

I say keep the job so you at least have solid income while you play.

Oh boy...that would be some overlay. Top 20% doesn't even make the money, less than half of one percent get $3k

Poker winnings can't be what you count on for food...

...unless you have really been around and know the ropes, I dojn't believe that you can count on enough poker winnings to pay room, board. I believe in you, but you should keep the secure waiting job and make poker your sideline for now...:icon_sant

Keep your day job Jake. Just play poker and whatever in your spare time for some extra cash at least until you have a roll you can survive on for at least 6 months.

50k hands/month at 10nl at a winrate of 5ptbb/100 will earn you $500/month.

You should easily be able to get 50k hands/month as a layabout... err sorry student :p.

Matched betting is great, but it a slow earner at 1st until you build your roll up gradually. Plus it's kinda limited to how much you can earn.

IMO I would concentrate on your poker as an aside to your studies, but you really have to start reading some of that s**t I sent you, because you have to study to beat the game and work your way up the limits.

Keep your job. Save a little from each check to either build a br through solid br management rules, or take shots at big guaranteed tourneys until you hit big.

I totally agree take everyones advice and keep your job for some solid income!

You cant rely on poker to make a steady amount of money for you like a job would, you could win $800 one month and the next only $50 its not reliable enough to take up full time unless you are extremely confident in your ability.

Yep deposit enough to have a roll for a few swings at either nl$10/25, and go from there. You could skirt nl$10 with 10buyins if you felt like risking it.

IMO deposit enough for nl$25, at least there you will earn enough FPPs for the odd bonus.

I think you should keep your waiting job, it might suck for now but use your spare time to build up your bankroll to where you are playing 25nl so you can make that $50/ week on average. Then once you've proven you can do it (chances are you'll be up to 50nl) you can quit your day job an use poker as a resource for income.

what works for me may not work for you. So sense I dont know you and how you play there is no correct answer to give you. Its like my tennis site people allways ask what racquet should they purchase? Then I say to them the same thing "what works for me may not work for you".

If I knew you and you where a skilled player(you can figure how your table is playing relativaly easy and you allways use the correct bankroll requirements and you have great patience and can never get on tilt.

Then I would say keep your job and play a little poker .
Eli Elezra would agree with me on this one :)

Thanks for all your responses guys, but i think some people thought I mean play poker for my Job lol

But nevermind right here's the plan, I have been thinking about this alot in the past day and spoken to Jay (jagsti) alot about it as he has helped me along the way and I know I have a good "coach" or "poker mentor" in him as he has a load of experience.

Plan

Begin to start playing again, starting with 5NL FR 8/10 tables.
Then get back up to 10NL asap but dont rush.
Play 50k Hands a month, which equivalents to about 10-12 hours per week at my hands per hour rate.
Sustain a 5ptBB/100 winrate and get up to 15/16 tabling which is where i was when I had to stop.
Then hopefully push up the limits with Jay's help and also reading alot of material.

Thats just a rough outline my blog post will contain a more detailed entry.I came to this conclusion because im not in desperate need of cash atm but would like abit more so while im working my way back up the limits i can get back into studying the game etc. Then in the within the next 3/4 months i shall hopefully be earning enough to support my needs.

Well you may need to put some more hours in if you want to achieve 50k hands/month, but being a student that should'nt be too hard :p.

Guessing, but 12 tabling around 20hrs/week should get you there or thereabouts.

But lets build it up gradually eh ;)
