Hello,

I recently played in a live cash game at a casino near me. I invested $200.00 and walked out with $350.00 after three hours of play. I started thinking...could I do this on a regular basis for some extra income?

I realize that some of that is just luck and that the profits will vary, but I also play online occasionally. I am also aware that you have to report your "winnings" to the IRS.

Any thoughts on this? I figure I could make an extra $500-$1,000 a week, depending on how much time I put into it. I'm also wondering whether or not it would become less fun as time goes on.

Thoughts? I appreciate the input.

Hi Timmah120,

Congrats on your win of $150 and Im sure you will enjoy it.

You didnt really give very much information about your statistics at live play and it sounds like you "occasionally" play online.

If you are baseing your $500-$1000 weekly win rate based on 1 time to the casino and winning $150,it would probably be unrealistic to expect this.

As you continue to go to casino and accumalate more statistics on your Wins/loses,I think you will get a better idea of where you stand.

Enjoy playing, dont quit your job (if you have 1) and see how it goes over time.

You will enjoy wins and suffer through loses and eventually you will have an idea of what you can expect over time as far as winnings.

Gl and hope this helps you and Welcome to CC

I have gone to the casino and turned $300 into $2000+ in one 8 hour session. I have also gone and lost $900 (3 buyins) as well. You have to have a bankroll that can sustain these swings. I know it seemed like easy money but don't kid yourself, the swings are huge since live play costs more money than online does.

Thank you all!

Thanks for your input everyone! It helps.
I'll keep the "swings" in mind, as well as the statistics.
@snow: I do have a full time teaching job, I was just considering picking up some poker time to see if it could be profitable; just a little extra cash on the side.
@duffer: Thanks for the heads up; I'll keep it within my bankroll and see what happens.

Welcome to cc and gratz on your win. I play live 3 to 4 days a week at my casino and do not make that much on avg. The swings can be huge and if you have a family that can interfere with your play.

Some nights it won't matter what you do - you will lose with second best hand everytime. AA cracked by 89 su, straights cracked by the river flush and so on. It's called variance. So if you decide to go back, keep this in mind and bankroll accordingly.

Some nights you can run like jesus and walk on water with any 2 cards. These nights are too few and too far between the other nights. I am a believe in beginner's luck. I've seen it happen often, a noob comes walking in, does nicely, walks away with a nice profit, comes back in several days for a month, loses all of their nice profit plus a lot extra and they are never seen again.

Not trying to discourage you, but just being realistic, it's better than fantasizing.

Good Luck!
