I feel like Tim Tebow is a perfect example of how far an iron will can take a truly average individual who is stubborn.

I think Tim Tebow is the perfect example.....his life experience shows you how powerful believing really is.....

thanks for that example supporting my point of view

It kind of supports it; it also doesn't given the fact that the very nature of his stubborn beliefs that he could be a great QUARTERBACK are the only reason that he didn't make it in the league.

Born without arms or legs, Nick Vujicic— motivational speaker and author of "No Arms, No Legs, No Worries"— has always inspired me to look beyond perceived limitations.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDsmzcDoL6E

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes."

(Charles R. Swindoll)

Belief is everything. Thanks Bear for that amazing video

I told myself if i achieved my next poker study target i could comment here again so to begin.

I think I need to clarify my position here more clearly since some people seem unable to see what they don't want to.

I have never said that anyone is incapable of achieving great things, in poker or anything else. What I have said is I believe very few will because very few people try hard enough.

now some people seem to act as if im taking it away from them when i say this. As if I am standing there and saying that you cant do it and it magically makes it so that they can't.

every single time I have heard of anyone that has ever become the best at anything and I am talking worlds best it has always been the same. they have always had some sort of insane devotion huge amounts of time invested and fought for it as if they were fighting for there life.

I have only ever heard of highly successful people that have taken that sort of devotion to anything. I have never heard of a failure that has, thats not to say they don't exist they may very well exist. but the reality is anyone who is putting that much effort into anything is far to busy to have much time if any for me or almost anyone else for that matter. so I don't know of them I only hear of famous people with this mentality. people that have made it. its a positive sample bias and it leaves me with no meaningful way to comment reliably on how likely any one individual taking this stance is likely to achieve world class standard.

In order to achieve world class you have to have the belief in yourself i agree with that. and someone has to be there so why couldn't it be you me or etc.

However, belief is not the only requirement to success, belief on its own will get you no where. I can;t be as good as Phil Ivey by simply believing it.

you say I cant judge you I am going to make some assumptions about you assumptions which are highly likely to be untrue.

The reason is I want to give you as many mitigating factors as i possibly can only to illustrate the point.

I will assume that your wife has some horrible life threatening disease, which has torn your family apart and put you through hell. that you have one child with severe autism and another with down syndrome.

that you used to rely on your wife to help with income as you were both working now with her bed ridden in hospital you find yourself having to work a 70 hour+ week just to keep your family financially alive and pay for the medical bills. its not just labor that is required though you need to be there to help your family as a father and a husband.you are desperate to make it big in poker in order to save your family but due to the harsh circumstances you can only play/study for three hours a day.

I assume that's highly unlikely to be your circumstances but assuming it is, it doesn't change the fact 3 hours a day wont make you world class you wont ever get you to the standard Phil ivey is at. you can hate me for pointing this out but its a fact. In order to be world class at anything you need extreme devotion and its not just working hard as much as you can within the confines of your responsibilities. no magic fairy is going to come and magically make it so because you tried as hard as could reasonably be expected given your circumstances.

the fact is the more time you put in the more you can learn and the higher standards you can reach. if you really think you could ever match the level Phil has reached with anything less then 8 hours a day of dedication then your sadly mistaken.

if you believe that you could match Phil Ivey if you put in 8 hours+ of time a day into poker then you might be right, who really knows? you were right earlier when you said its not just about quantity its quality too. but that doesn't mean quantity isn't important. to make it to world class level you need huge quantities of top quality study and effort.

those that say they cant reach the top no matter how hard they work will probably never reach the top as they already set there limit. that doesn't mean though that those that believe they can, will do so simply by believing it.

like it or not it would take years of constant study and work matching or exceeding the hours of a full time job to even stand a chance at it. even then you could fail, but heck if you truly did top quality study with those kind of hours I am almost certain you would be highly successful maybe not world class who knows though.

you wont ever get there without that. you may have decent success maybe even a six figure income with less but youd never get to world class level with anything less.

many people most people lack all of the following to achieve that
1. the opportunity few actually have the opportunity to put that much into it they have other commitments and responsibilities
2.the drive and will power to make that sort of effort.
3. to make the sacrifices giving up a social life friends family time and relationships for that.

its harsh but true thats what it takes.

note I may be wrong but I don't think Ivey was getting any when he was sleeping rough.

its not as if me saying you can and will be the worlds best will suddenly make you beat $40,000 NL or the $1000 six max hypers.

if you want to live in denial of that then you will never make it.

Oh no, here comes an article.

Bro, you better read up on the subject. General education psychology taught you nothing!

Everybody has to write this essay, right?

I feel like Tim Tebow is a perfect example of how far an iron will can take a truly average individual who is stubborn.

I have a psychology degree, none of the bs he posts is remotely related

Punctual..... Belief does not matter whatsoever if you do not possess the mental strength and ability to succeed. I'm not saying I can't succeed.... Maybe someday I can. But there's one thing I can tell you.... If I do.... It won't be Because I believed I could do it. It will be because I have developed, and unlocked my max potential. THERE IS A CAP to how good one can be. Believing in yourself will not raise the cap for how good you can be

Everyone just listen to duggs. He's spot on as usual.

We are on exactly the same page. Thank you for clarifying. Nothing is free in this world. But i believe that if you work hard enough at something, there is no limit to where you can go. When i say work hard I mean putting your heart, soul, blood, sweat, and tears into something: devoting yourself to something to such an extent that you become one with that thing. Anyone who does this will be great, IMHO.....unless underlying all of htat they don't believe they can......because when it comes down to it we become what we believe. Belief is where it all starts: we have a desire to become something, then we believe we can do it and then we put our hearts and souls into it to make it happen. I think belief is an essential component.

in regards to the Nick video yes he is truly inspirational I have seen several videos about that guy and read up quite a bit. he is awe inspiring truly an example of someone that MADE EXTREME EFFORT AND SHOWED EXTREME DEVOTION WHO WENT ON TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS.

I don't think he achieved his success by just believing it.

Well I do have a math and computer science degree myself. I almost minored in psychology (was two courses short). But I have taken the basic psych course 101 and behavioural statistics and am at least familiar with the nature/nuture debate.

No one said just believing is sufficient. Please show me where I have said that? What I did imply was that if "NICK" had the losing mentality that Ed Miller is infecting viewers with in the posted video, then NICK would have just been another handicapped man brainwashed by a system telling him what he can and can not achieve in his life and in all likeliehood with such an attitude would NOT have achieved great things.

If you don't believe you will achieve great things, you won't! This doesn't mean that believing you will achieve great things is sufficient.....necessary but not sufficient

NO. We do not "become what we believe". Everyone has a certain potential, whether it be high or low. Unlocking the full extent of your potential, can be done through studying and working hard. Maybe belief can drive the want to unlock the full potential. it can drive that will. However where we all really disagree with you is your belief that anyone can be an Ivey with enough hard work and dedication. That is not true at all. The average human is physically incapable of grasping the concepts required for idk..... 100NL+. Most people will not get there. Sure you can sit after binking a tourney or something but most players will never be the level required to beat it regularly regardless of how hard they try, because the concepts are over their head. The difference between 100NL and 100kNL is obviously massive. And someone who can grasp 100NL concepts will never be able to grasp 100kNL concepts because they just are incapable of comprehending them.

Perhaps this little story will emphasize the importance of belief. If you don't believe you can do something, you won't do it!

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?

Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

Well, we certainly can never become what we can not fathom. If you can not believe in the possibility of becoming a professional poker player, then you never will become a professional poker player. Of that I am pretty sure

Humans aren't elephants and that story is essentially irrelevant. However it is a good example of inferior minds (elephants) being unable to grasp concepts which greater minds (humans) find so basic and easy.

God could this dude suck Phil Iveys ego-dick anymore. All i hear through whole video "phil ivey is the best" lol. His stats say other wise but ok buddy, he is very good and one of the best, but I dont think there is a "best" player. 2nd, why didnt this jack ass just call it "Everyones terrible at NL hold em". Like that is so idiotic, to compare it to chess the whole way but say everyones terrible at "poker". Does this guy know Hold em isnt the only poker? There are plenty of other variations, so to say people just cap on learning is nonsense. Now obviously, yea no shit we arent playing with elite players at 2/5 limits, but new elite players moving there way up the ranks that arent elite yet probably play there. He just had a pissy attitude with the whole everyone is terrible. I could go on more but why? Basically was just a video of some guy praising phil ivey and comparing "poker" go chess, yet he wasnt comparing all of poker, just NL holdem.

You know elephants have photographic memories? Just because an animal is not human does not necessarily make it inferior....lol....and I believe that humans can be trained just like animals are trained....humans are a form of animal, after all

And just look at how well society is training you to not believe in yourself.....

I don't disagree with you it was more aimed at the forum in general. there's still enough people arguing that simple believe and reasonable effort is enough. its not.

believe and a "reasonable effort" may potentially get you to the point of making a living or subsidizing your income with poker. the only thing that will get world class is extreme effort.

im not arguing with you it appears we may be on the same page, its just there are others who believe otherwise.

Maybe we can do a heads up tournament. I don't have experience in cash games. Problem is, I am currently with no bankroll. When i lose a bankroll I intentionally give myself a few months before depositing again....otherwise I could see myself out of house and home as I try to develop my poker skill.

We could do a play money heads up tournament if you are interested.

Maybe best of 5, 11, 21, 51, 101 games? I will play you all day and night so you can show just how much better you are than me, since this is what you seem to be claiming
