Can a player still move from micros to highstakes?

Hello everyone, I have just found the forum and like both the look and content so far :)
I have played online poker on and off since November 2005. Back then it was common to hear of players moving from the tiny $0.01/0.02 levels all the way to the ultra highstakes games online. Names like Brian Townsend and Nebuchad from Ladbrokes both have interesting stories where they move from $50 games to highstakes in the space of about a year. These are just two examples.
Do you think this is still possible? Have the games changed so much that a player wouldn't be able to move up the limits in a similar way? I have just been playing some £20 sng's on William Hills recently for the first time in a long time and the games seem very hard to beat compared to how I remember them.
Any views?

I look forward to reading the other threads on the site :)

thanks

GregMoore

quite difficult. i was talking to someone about this exact subject just a couple days ago. rakeback is a must. more than half your profits will be coming just from rakeback. he also mentioned that until you get passed the rake trap, you wont be seeing a large profit from your play. which in all reality it does make pretty good sense to me. you also make more money mass tabling in the micros than you would be putting you A game into 4 tables in the micros.

There's no doubt it's more difficult than it was. There are way more regs, and way more informed players because of all the training sites + forums out there, but still very very beatable.

However, the games are still littered with terrible players. I like many people on this forum, started quite late in the game in terms of studying trying to improve etc and at a time when poker had become much harder. However, I'v managed to consistently build several bankrolls from very small amounts on multiple sites.

pokerstars is my best and most activity and likely the most difficult site in terms of better players but I've gone from like $10 and up over $3000 when I include MTT/SnG/cash games and still building consistently well and I've moved up obviously in stakes so it's definetly possible as I'm living proof and I'm not exactly a great player.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the answers. It is only really in the last few months have I actually tried to learn strategy from books, videos, etc. Since 2005 I have basically just messed around while playing and not really focused while sat in a game. My common error was to have a movie on in the background. Now for the first time I am giving poker 100% attention and since adopting this approach I have fell back in love with poker. Up till recently I had never even looked at a hand history, lol. I wish I hadn't wasted nearly 8 years being lazy.

It's really easy to win if you find a "real poker" non-rigged site. Because there's a lot of fish u can't let them win, so if it's rigged 50%-75% u will lose best hands. SERIOUSLY. Unless I'm the unluckier mother****er ever.

Can we get a list of these "non-rigged" sites?

With how players play now and sites offering certain tournies its much much harder to go from micro stakes to high stakes. You have to be able to ween out all the kinks in it. Wish you the best of luck
