So I have been reading a new old book ..... ( The Poker tournament Formula vol 1 by Arnold Snyder ) and working on a lot of math concepts ... math never being something I was naturally gifted at ... I have come a long and fairly well but not without many headaches ... The book I have had for years but for some reason never read before .. who knows : )

Anyhow my week has been very up and down as far as poker is concerned .. I have had 2 first place finishes a third place at some low buy in tournaments ... $ 1.10 - 3.30 and one $35 buy in local .... and I think was a 9 or tenth in one of our freerolls this week .... so not horrible, but on the other side of the coin almost every other tournament I have played and there have been quite a few I have busted like in the first 15 minutes ...mostly from trying new things and being a little too aggressive with them ....

For me I usually roll along fairly balanced and things go pretty much ok .. but if I am
studying something or trying to implement changes it's kind of a crap shoot .. and that's probably the way it should be ... I will shake myself out of this in likely another week or so and will have determined what all of the study means to me and how I will use it.

I'm sure I am not the only one, but would be interested to know if someone has tips for making this period more balanced or it just going to always be a situation of extremes until it becomes incorporated ... and how long does it take you to digest things and then take what you have gleaned and blend it into your game .. anyhow just some thoughts and a couple questions

It's been a very long time since I've read that book. What I still recall about it though was that it was geared towards a particular format >>> fast-structured, live, low buy-in tourneys. I can't recall what it was recommending to do as far as bet-sizing goes (I'm guessing larger sizing preflop & bigger sizing postflop vs. what is more typical of today's game... maybe I'm way off the mark here ?? Like I said, it's been many years since I've read that book (10yrs.)).

I can fully relate to how one's game can be affected after reading through a poker book. I can recall when I read Super System & was getting right carried away with hands like 64o lol.

Have you read many other poker books?

What are you hoping to gain from the current one you're reading? & Why that one?

If you're interested, I could recommend some books for you. Let me know where you're at with the game & what you're interested in (tournaments, cash table). I'm a poker book junkie!

Sorry with the holidays coming here I haven't been round quite as much ... and hehe this will take a few :p .....

I 'll start with the book I mentioned ... you are correct mostly and your memory remains intact : ) he advocates a very aggressive strategy ... including large bets up to pot x 2 or a flat out jam ...very aggressive positional play in fast tournaments online and live .. as to why that one , I have mostly played cash games ..but started playing tournaments more and I find I love the excitement and thrill of that format and being under the threat of elimination every hand you play.. I thought it was time I spent a little more time working on that .... as to what I hope to learn ... mostly whatever shakes loose from the tree ... ...Bill Nye said something once and it stuck in my head and I try to live by it ... " Everyone you meet knows something you do not " I feel that's very profound, and will listen to someone for a minute regardless of how I view someone's education level, their politics or any other position they have until they prove to me I should just leave them to their issues and ignorance, and walk away :p .. sadly that is happening more and more often in my country and the world.

As to where I am at with my game ... I play 1/2 and 1/3 and sometimes 2/5cash games at the local casinos where they offer daily $35 buy in tournaments and a $150 buy on Sundays at the other one I play at and have my share of cashes and some wins ... these are mostly NLHE although I also love Stud and Razz, and Ace to Five... if I can find the game and will sit down to PLO although I am the very definition of a beginner in Omaha ....

I like to play online but don't trust any of the sites offered here very far at all, remembers waking up to a Department of Justice splash page saying my accounts had been frozen and there would be no more play there on Black Friday, so I have even only deposited at 2 of them now and just to get money I had won there in freerolls or parlayed through other small buy in tables , or to be able to continue playing there ... so mostly 1/2 cent and 2/5 cent games and small tournaments say up to $10 buys .. I will play bigger tournaments sometimes up to the $109 buy in tournaments if I can satellite my way in which I do frequently .....but I won't keep much money in any of them .. I basically expect the government here to shut them down at any moment especially if Sheldon Adelson and Trump's DOJ have their way lol .....

I am now over 50 with Grand kids ( My daughter loves Poker so I show her everything she will listen to, The boys are both in the military and couldn't possibly care less about it lol ) .... I am an avid reader, and very passionate about Poker ... I am not even close to a pro but I do love taking money from peeps, that's quite a thrill :p so I try to get better at that and improve my game ...

My advice is not base your game entirely on a book. Instead use the help improve your game if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the response.

I do have some suggestions for books for sure! I'll respond soon but want to give it some time & effort so will try to get back in the next couple days as I'm currently multi-tabling some micro cash tables.
Your poker story has some similarities to my own.

Actually I don't know what you mean.

Nobody reads a poker book with expectations of basing their entire game upon it. (not that I know of anyways). Poker books aren't even written in such a way that they'd be thinking you'd ever consider doing this. Generally they're not written with some blueprint on how to play (although the Poker Blueprint is actually a decent book, lol)... but instead to teach you how to think.
