I asked this question at my local poker game the other night and the answers were split 50:50. Am interested in what other CC'ers would say:

If you had a magic poker wand and instantly could be either twice as good or twice as lucky, which would you choose?

wtf does twice as lucky mean? Do the cards somehow change how often they appear? Are there more chances for me to make my hands? I don't get it.

Why don't you just ask if you'd rather be Phil Ivey or Jerry Yang. I'd choose Ivey for the record...

Twice as lucky.

Think about it, if anyone gets twice as lucky, they will be perceived as being twice as good.:D

Not at all. Does twice as lucky mean that if I have KK and you have AA my KK will win 40% of the time instead of 20%??? That my 4 flush will hit 70% rather than 35% by the river? That I'll hit set 24% of the time not 12%?

You see what I'm saying right? There is NO LUCK in poker. Only math. So are you changing the odds by saying twice as lucky or is it just some silly saying???

If by twice as lucky you mean my flush draws will hit 70% of the time instead of 35% of the time then I think I'm already "good" enough to take advantage of that and absolutely, I'd take double luck over double skill.

If you mean something else, then I'm really not sure how to answer.

In a round-about way I think I have my answer. My local game people value luck too highly, CC'ers who know more about the game discount the "luck" effect and see it as maths.
Might have been a silly question but I've learned something none the less.

The thing is, if luck does exist, how does it manifest itself?

How many times have you folded a pp, watched a set come, thought to yourself 'DAMN!', then watch a flush fill? Were you lucky there or unlucky there? Were you good or bad?

Or comeback from a piss, see you missed an AA hand (damn again), then saw that a str8 won the hand? Ahhhhhhhhhh...

Until we can ever precisely define 'luck', we can never really learn how to deal with any luck factor.

I'd answer this way:

Rather be twice as good at ring and twice as lucky in MTTs.

I defined luck as having your cards hit more often than not and having playable hands instead of 2 hours of face rag offsuit and not having your big pocket pairs lose to 94s.

Twice as lucky, not paticuarly close. Means I only need like 25% equity to call allins pre flop.
