18 i wanna be a pro poker player. any advise

i am 18 and have played poker texas hold em for 2 weeks i have got 5 books and i am reading them at the moment. i seem to make money on the cheap tables but when i move up in cost of the tables i lose all my profits.

can a pro give me some advise cos i am bored of making money on horse betting, (i make £800 a week), i really like playing poker.

can i have some advise of any sofware to use to help my game or anything anyone can suggest. i am getting a little bored of the books they are massive. should i wait till i read books or what?

any anything u would like to suggest.

I just play a lot of poker. Best way to learn your style is to play. I read Phil Hellmuths book to get some basics but the rest is what I do with it.

Play Smart. But don't be afraid to gamble. Go with your instincts.

I suggest if ure serious you need to atleast get a job 1-2 days a week that you can fall back on. Play online and play ring games at tourneys and once you are sure..move to las vegas. But the ones who suceed in Vegas stay in Vegas

Books are good to get a foundation and understanding of the games principles. They can be very heavy reading and repetative if you have 5 to read. It starts to become panning for gold (just getting little nuggets of good advice here and there) if you read to many.

You need to start finding live games and play and play and play. The reason for live games is you have to remove your tells and calm your nerves when people are staring you down. You can't do that playing on the computer.


The money becomes an issue when you are playing over you funds. Whatever money you bring to the table you must have no fear of losing it. It can't be rent money or food money. When you play with the fear of losing it all you will be forced into making decisions that are not good poker decisions. Make enough money on the cheap tables and use that to move up. You could also just spend time watching the more expensive games and see how they play. You have to feel comfortable making the bets at each level otherwise you should not be playing at that table yet.

You can make a living just playing poker and never hit the wsop or the pro circuit. I make a supplemental income by playing poker and if spent all my time I could scratch out a living just by playing local casinos and tournaments.

Hmmmmm? Play lots of poker, read about bankrolls and bankroll management. You've been playing for 2 weeks, put it in perspective, take your time, and learn the game.

Read all the poker stratedgy threads here. Pay close attention to the ones posted by Diabloblanco, Rammerjammer, Fours Dogs and Michelle. These are the ones that will help you and are the most energenic and entertaining.

Why do you want to be a pro player? Im curious. I honestly will post a rely but I need to know what your motivation is to become a pro.... and be honest, deal?

basically i wanna be a pro poker player to make cash. i want to be a very rich man and i like playing poker, it's better than a normal job. i want to be on £10,000 a week and i am exploring many ways. i will be able to do this gambling on horses but i want to do other things instead of this and poker is one of them. fame doesn't matter to me i just want £1,000,000 a year so my motovaition is loads and loads of money and a job i will enjoy. i was always good at maths i got A* and failed everything else because i only ebjoyed maths the rest bored me. wat eva i am interested in i will try hard at and achieve. (you may be able to tell that my english isn't so hot.)

i have a book called 'play poker like the pros' by phil hellmuth, jr. i am finding it alot easier to read than supersystem as i am a begginer. i would advise this book to any beginner.

A couple things I see right off the bat. Anyone that writes sentences full of words like "wat eva" and "cos", probably isn't 18 years old. Not positive on that one, but pretty sure. Also, as rob already pointed out, you're tired of making what amounts to well over a grand a week? Stop it. You're 18 (supposedly) and making that kind of loot isn't quite good enough? Stop it. Ten grand a week you want to win a week you say? Stop it.

Look man, here's the first free lesson you're going to get. In poker, you have to earn things. A name for yourself and respect are two of the most important, and to do either you have to invest time. You cannot realistically expect to buy a few books by successful players and just immediately jump in the deep water. You will invariably run into a few sharks that will leave you busted out every single time. Assuming the most honest part of your story was that you want to learn poker, then welcome aboard. Become a student of the game and not simply a player. Don't try to pull the wool on this group of people, because it often doesn't work. Just be yourself (whomever that is) and be prepared for a long arduous journey if you really are commited to the goals you have set here. This will not happen overnight, or in a month, or even in a lifetime. Some just don't have the chops, and enjoy a life of casual poker and decent supplemental income, others have what it takes, and enjoy the best the game has to offer. If you're a gambler the last line of this will make perfect sense to you...anyone is a severe dog to make it to the highest ranks of the game, put it in perspective, and prepare to wait.

I wonder how he managed to learn how to make £800 a week on the horses at his age. You cant gamble until that age in the UK so he is either very very lucky or a genius, or third and most likely, a liar

Carry on earning what you get at the moment and invest that in poker....and to be honest mate £800 a week is nothing. I have made thousands in weekend on horses and greyhounds

If you are not already banned from the site, then I suggest you lighten up a bit and read some more advice. We are not always right on this forum but we advise ppl to make each other better players, you could do a lot worse if you wanna pick up some tips on spending your hard earned gambling profits

Well, you sure do act all of 18. If you think that you can just walk into poker after reading a few books and think you will make millions you can come play at my house any day of the week.

The biggest part of learning poker is just playing poker. You can read all you want but if you seriously think you want to do it full time you need to develop thicker skin and take a big bite or reality. How many people do you think can make a full time living playing poker? You might as well go and try to walk on to Manchester United for the upcoming season. You will spend 2-3 years just getting the feel and the jitters out of when you get your first big money all in or am just one position from the money and someone reraises you all in. No book can tell you what to do, you just have to learn.

By the way, yesterday I played golf for the first time and made a par, I thinking of going pro next week.

It isn't like you to be so nice Diablo LOL. Well youve pretty much summed out everything I wanted to say. This guys a waste of forum threads, so we could do without him definitely. Laughed my butt of when I read his posts.

I was only nice because he seemed like he was under 16. He didn't seem like an adult, and I don't typically attack kids, lol. If he would have changed his tune and really wanted to learn, I would have helped in any way possible. He decided to call us pricks and such so as far as I am concerned, he's gone.

the more you play the better you will become. I guess you can become a good poker player over night but the only person I know that did that is Moneymaker.

I'd like to make a living from poker. Problem is, I have no initial outlay, so I'm having to rely on freerolls, and since I currently have 40 cents in Poker.com, that makes life tricky

Of course I don't want to be rich. I'm a writer, and have a reasonable freelance gig right now that covers probably a third of my expenses. I'm stuck at home due to health reasons, so anything I can do to boost that will be nice.

Now how do I spin 40 cents into a couple of thousand bucks?
