Hi, poker seems like a lot of fun but their is one big issue that is stopping me from playing it. Im only 16 and my parents despise it because they call it pure gambeling and compair it to a roulet table (eventhough it is really more like chess). And they are now refusing to buy me a car and help pay for my college unless i stop playing. I would stop if i was no good but i seem to have a tallent for this because earlier this week i finnished in the money in the wsop simulator on dd poker 3 (basically the same thing as the real) and won a free roll turnament on americas card room. Also i have a photographic memory so stuff that makes me think is really intertaining for me. So do you guys think i have potential with poker or should i just listen to my parents?

Your parents are smart people, they are all correctly say. Poker is evil, there is no easy money, you only seems that you can earn money, all this routine and gambling.

So you should listen to your parents and go do your homework.

For me, poker is purely a hobby and I do not set myself the task to make them as you advise. because is a gamble, and at some moment you can be without panties. And listen to the parents - it's your own business. Parents are not bad advice. I would be your problem .LOL

You don't say my parents think the same and I as well see chess a lot like chess. Do you play chess?? I do it's good for the brain, but moving on. This is a tough decision...but may I propose an idea. Why not set a deadline for yourself?? If you don't win a major tournament or at least make enough profit in poker to make a decent down payment for a car and to pay part of your tuition for college. You stop playing poker for a while, like the other user said poker is not going anywhere it'll still be around for some time. What do you think? ?

Lol see poker a lot like chess...my bad lol

If you really have natural poker talent it's pretty easy to see that the EV of waiting until you're 18 to play is greater than having your parents withdrawal their support.

Photographic memory ! Why is your spelling so bad ? My parents never bought or paid for anything for me at 16... Finish school first then get a job and study or play online poker but leave your parents out of the equation....

I remember these days. And still my family, aside from my dad, think the same way. Please the family now, while you can, pursue the poker after, or just don't discuss it with them if you play, even if you score or something like that. They clearly don't see it the way you do, and they won't budge, you can only hope they will think differently if/when you make it but they may not still.

1. You're only 16, and legally you're not allowed to play poker for money.

2. They are your parents. My parents also don't encourage my poker gambling at all, but as long as I'm playing with my money they are fine with it. Still, you're only 16, so you have no choice but to listen to them.

3. Thinking you're good and have a talent is common. Everyone thinks that. Besides pros, you won't find one single "serious" player who is able to say "Nah, I'm not good. I just win money here and there". Wrong mindset. That's how people get addicted to stuff and keep losing more and more money.

4. If you think an online WSOP simulator is even remotely the same as the real thing, jump out of poker altogether and go educate yourself.

5. And now America's Card room can check your account and prevent you from withdrawing and permanently ban you from their software. Besides, I've won some freerolls too, and they are more about luck than skill.

6. Everyone has photographic memory, some only have it naturally better than others. Besides, for those interested in studying it, everyone can reach a pretty good photographic memory.

To sum up, listen to your parents. I've been there, I know how that is. I now realize I'm not a good player. I am aiming to be a good player, but I'm not one yet. My parents have also told me hundreds of times to forget about poker.
Word of advice: focus on studying. Start playing when you're 18 if you want to, sure, but even then, focus on studies. Always have poker as a Plan B (or C) until you get your life in order.

Poker is just reliable enough to make it your main source of income. Its great for some extra side cash if you can control yourself. I know of pros that did very well for years and then still went bust and lost everything. Play poker on your free time have fun with it and stay in school :)

Get your parents to buy you a car and pay for your college. Remember to use enough time in college to learn probability theories and maybe some psychology etc. while you study and it will help you both with poker and probably with your future work if poker won't be your future full time work (like it won't be for 99% players, but it can be a good and profitable hobby).

No one is really legally allowed to play poker online if you live in the usa. Unless you live in Nevada or New Jersey and that still is not federal only state legal. I would still continue play poker if I was you. I started playing online when I was 16 and never had a issue. Your parents are probably right but, its your life not theirs live it. Although like I said in my other post your school is much more important Family>School>poker or whatever you have fun doing in that order. Don't start playing poker just to make money 99% of the time it will be a total let down.

I was banned from a poker room because they investigated the account I opened when I was 15. Keep in mind that if you are planing on joining CC Freeroll Club, you'll have to say your username on the rooms, and if anyone cares to investigate in what you just said... Talking from experience here (although fortunately it didn't involve CC). You're never free from the accounts you have opened in the past, and you really shouldn't make comments about them on a (possibly affiliated) poker forum.

Besides it's a hassle for the room itself. I've heard about several websites that shutdown awesome freerolls partly because the amount of underaged players on them was too great (ex. Carbon. They would send age-verification emails to people who were building a pretty good bankroll on their freerolls and most of them wouldn't reply). Not to mention the scandal of underage people being caught in a tournament, and then everyone has to be paid and the tournament cancelled.

And you are allowed to play poker online on the USA, just not on the major rooms. Else, why should America Cardroom even be a thing?

I do agree though. If you like to play poker, then by all means keep playing. Just be careful and don't go down the wrong paths. And the "I'm a talented player and nothing can stop me" mindset is one of those thing that leads people to keep investing and investing and not learning, because they think they are better than anyone else. Applies on poker and on life too, all you need to do is take a look around to find people who have fallen prey to this :/

Your parents are absolutely correct.

Mistakes on spellings would somehow indicate tendencies on poker play mistakes likewise.

Many among us thought we are so good and dream we can beat it but the truth is, others are better than us.

Simulator on ddpoker 3 is totally different from real thing.

Lastly, since you have photographic memory, then its suits you better to go to school and not poker.

If you can't afford and need your parents to buy you a car and to pay for your schooling you are not ready for poker, you need to have money for poker.

I'll quit playing poker if your parents will get me a new car and pay for school! No promises after I graduate though.

All kidding aside:

Play for free, read books, and have social goof games to teach friends how to play. Have fun. If you're as good as you imply, it might not always be fun once it's your job.
