Well after reading a lot of different post on this site It seems that a lot of house games have little or no rake at all. Where Im from players look forwaed to being the house guy so they can rake the pot. Just about every place I go the guy who does the rake would take 10% of each winning pot. The crazy thing about it is that whoever rakes can never go all in. Obviously there are many problems to these rule ( As I have learn from looking at post on cardschat). For instance If I go to a house game all I should have to do is wait until I get the house man in a good part and bet 1000 ( something I know he cant cover ) and he would have to fold. I express that fact to this group of players before but it seems like they are not willing to let this style go. The people who rake 10% do give a rake back of 15 dollars to each player once they go broke. I think I can be the one to actually get poker going the right way here. I build and sale poker tables ( which many places we play on kitchen tables) I don't mind just having games for mainly the play style. Meaning if I rake I would probably just do 2 dollars a pot , just to cover for the unlimited food and drinks. Also unlike many places we play at I would do things right ( such as big blind and small blinds). Any advice would be helpful...A young guy just trying to play REAL POKER!

that whole no all in for the person collecting rake makes NO sense at all. My home games we don't do rake. If im hosting and supplying food and drinks i just tell people to throw up 5 bucks or whatever otherwise bring your own damn beer and food and lets play some cards haha.

The no all in is stupid for real, I heard the reason is because the other players can get a chance to win their money back. You bring up a good point though. What If I just host a game and just play. I admit , since playing this way my mental approach to the game is I cant wait to rake so I can win my money back. I should start hosting games so we can show off real skills. I was once the best in this area, but a few set backs has me looking sluggish. I think what I make in just playing would top any rake I would take.

In my experience, there is normally no rake in home games. The host may ask players to contribute to food and drink, either by bringing a bottle or by making a modest cash contribution.

i started playing home games with a few friends, before we start we decide what we buy to drink, we all chip in for that, and for the snacks, rest is fair game, as they are very bad at poker i usually end up with all the money at the table.

The last place besides the casinos that take rake was in an back poker house where he also provided more than poker, there was also slots and a few games. He also provided a best hand jackpot and all the food and drinks. If I went to a house game and they started talking about rake I would probably leave and go somewhere where it was worth a 10 percent rake.

A home game with rake is not a home game, it's an illegal casino.

Im glad of what a lot of you are saying. I use to tell my friends that I dont get the point of the rake. They said its to cover the food and beer. Well after two hours ( if that ) both the beer and food is gone and I told one guy that after three hands of raking he has his money back. I dont mind having a game with no rake ( and serve more food and beer then others do). I guess its up to me to do the right thing.

^ this. Plus any legit raked game has a cap on the amount taken from each pot. So it shouldn't just be a flat 10%, it should be 10% up to a maximum of $10 or something.

Illegality aside, if there's no cap on the rake taken from any given pot then don't ever play in this game again, it's horrible.

Ouch - guess I don't want to play in French casinos then. Though in reality it's probably not that much worse than the Melbourne casino where in some games there's a cap but it's so high it may as well not be there. At least they've stopped charging time on top of rake in most games :p
