Hey guys,

Just a couple of questions. I recently started playing online poker, i deposited $25 and started to play 0.02/0.04 games. I know my BR isn't high enough for NL like that, but i can't afford to deposit anymore, so i'm trying my best with what i have.

At first, i lost big. I went down to 6.81. Then i got it together again and started buying in for $2 instead of $5. I made it back up to 17, only to fall down to $4.79 again. Now i'm back up at $27.47, feeling good with how i'm playing.

My problem has been that i win consistently on small, medium and large pots and then i seem to lose it all on big pots. I don't really think it's a case of playing bad, i don't think i'm making alot of bad calls, but i just seem to win 100 small hands and lose 2 big hands and breakeven.

Is there any way to avoid this or is it 'just poker'?

Thanks,

It can be very difficult to access you leaks without a more in-depth look at your stats and losing hands. Feel free to post a few.

Straight away from the tone of your post it seems that you are over-valuing top pair top kicker and overpairs to the flop. These hands play out much much different in deep stacked no limit poker than in a shallower tournament format. Have a look around at some of the HA hands, start playing small pairs almost every time preflop looking to hit a set, hands like 67s also play fantastic in multiway pots because these are the hands we are looking to flop big with and get action against the overpair type hands.

Playing cash games are just going to get you in trouble. The variance is so huge. Particularly with your BR. Why not play some SNG's. Try to build your BR with some freerolls.
I did a little experiment. I got on bodog with no deposit. I played one freeroll everyday. Soon I started playing SNG's. In a month's time I have $50 in my account. I already have a nice size BR on Full Tilt and poker stars. So I dont play on BD every day now but I'm convinced that if I put my self totally into it I could raise a bigger BR on Bodog.
Think about building your BR instead of gambling with it. Take the opportunity the sites have to offer. Freerolls, SNG's with a 3rd of the field come in the money. On Bodog some SNG's have 40% come in winners. Good luck.

it's almost impossible to overvalue overpairs at .02/.04, the players stack off with top pair-any kicker routinely in my experience messing around at micros. really don't think playing them super aggro is going to be a problem, and it's often true for TPTK as well
