Hello,

I am still a beginner at poker, although I have been playing poker for quite a while, and I wanted to ask where should I be playing? Should I play 6 player or 9 player poker? Maybe spin and go, MTT, Zoom? Fixed limit or no limit? My main goal is to learn to be better at poker and win a little bit of money, build my bankroll. Most of the time I was playing 6 player cash games, but although I feel that I play a lot better, I still haven't been able to win some cash in the long run.

Thank you for your answers.

a lot of sites offer play money, which i would take advantage of so you can get used to the actual softer and find one you enjoy. playing online is different than live, and when i first started, it was tough adjusting to reacting really quickly.

from there, once you understand how fast paced it is, you can start figuring out where you want to actually deposit and start building a BR. you do not want to make a deposit, you can play free rolls at certain sites, but note that not all sites offer free rolls.

cardschat wrote an article on sites they would suggest, and i would highly recommend checking it out within this hyperlink.

everyone starts somewhere. i don't want to make a direct recommendation as i have been moving around between sites lololol.

In my opinion, the 6-max poker, is more easy than 9-max. If you don't win in cash, try the 6-max turbo tournaments.

Some websites say that limit holdem is best for beginners because you get to play the same game and lose less. Although I feel thats not really true, because the limit affects the game. What are your thoughts on this?

Although I've also heard it said that you lose less in limit, I don't really agree. It's a different game in the sense that 1) it's much harder to pull off a bluff...you can't raise enough, so 2) people tend to call you down lighter hoping to connect 3) you can still lose just as much if it is a multiway pot and there are raises...it can still be just as expensive if you call it down with second nuts

When I started playing poker, I tried to play only the cheapest SnG tournaments.
The best selection of such tournaments for me was at pokerstars.

I think you should try all the games and make your own decision! Maybe you can find your best game in PLO8. No one will be able to tell you, just make a decision by yourself!

New player

I recently started plating real-money poker online at Bovada. I have exclusively played cash games 6NL and (preferably) 9NL. At the lowest limits you get a pretty wild game and don't win enough money to be worth the time. Adversely, for a beginner such as myself I have had some success at .10/.25 9NL. My goal is to find the right limits where I can play profitably consistently.

I think cash games at low lomits are great for gaining experience as you should be able to see a lot of hands.

i think you can try SNG(regular or turbo, not super turbo) first, it's not so big dispersion as in in mtt and it's much more easier than cash games.

Hey. I guess that 6max No-Limit it's ok. MTT and Zoom absolutely not.

Few years ago when I started playing poker, I played some FunSteps 1, first 3 players received the ticket to Fun Step 2 -first 3 players, ticket to Fun Step 3 ... Fun Step 3 winner received 1 real dollar! That's how I started. There were free games!

Anyway .... find free games for beging!!!

Good Luck at tables!!!

You should try to learn the basics using fake money so there is no pressure to lose sometimes. Although your opponents there will play very different, you can still learn some things from yourself. Afterwards i would recommend playing cash game with 6

First of all you have to realise in what modality where you feel confident and comfortable to
play.
You have to choose only one and exploit it . You have to study hard . If you are playing different modalities you will never be a winner poker or maybe could be after many years.
Pick one , study hard and suddenly you will be a winner.

Thank you for your answers. From all of you I learned that I shouldn't be looking elsewhere. Most of the time I was playing 6 player NL, so it means I should keep playing that until I get good at it.

Since you're playing on PokerStars it would be worth your time to check out Poker School Online (PSO). Lots of information and opportunities to build a bank roll. You stated your main goal is to learn to be better at poker, btw you're off to a great start, being here at CardsChat is great place to gather additional knowledge.

Everywhere that you can if you really want to be the best or at least make money while playing. Play anywhere that you can get your head in a game unless you think the people that are playing at the "home games" are rigging you into a trap.

As far as online, just depends on your country of residence but I would recommend all the sites that CardsChat works with. The only concern would be is your bankroll and limits.
