This has always been my problem. When i play cash games at pokerstars and i get ahead 3x my buy in, i wanted to stop and leave the table, but i always get this urge to continue playing and hope to get ahead more.
What happens next is that i get carried away and ends up busted. :(
Whats the best rule of thumb to follow, to determine when to leave the table when winning?

For me once i get way ahead of my buyin i will just fold every hand until i get monster cards, spend my time observing fellow players, figure out how they play who is the weakest target, etc

I think this is a common problem. I think that the best strategy is to set limits as to gains and losses before you play. For example, you can decide to leave a table if you lose half your stack, or gain 2x. Then move to another table. Just remember that once you set you limit, stick to it no matter what. It's greed that gets us. I often set a goal of making 25% profit and then leave. Always more tables. I also sometimes set limits on what other players are doing. If other players have 500 big blinds, I may leave. No hard and fast rules, just setting your goals and sticking to them.

How as Daniel Negreanu says when you win-continue to play , when you lose just stop

I use a bankroll strategy. When i was first starting out my bankroll i had very little so I would buy in for the minimum and then cash out when I doubled-up to build my bankroll. It worked great and sometimes I would even be able to cash out 2-3 buy-ins from one big hand. Now that I am much more comfortable buying in for less than .0006 of my entire roll I play as long as I want and dont leave the table unless i feel like it. Usually I will cash out if the table is loose aggressive and im up 7-10 buy-ins. The money i have behind really sets me at ease when it comes to cashing out so I no longer worry even if i blow up and lose my entire stack somehow.

Well if thats your case, then when ever u make x3 times the buyin, quit, dont w8 the deck to turn cold and lose everything, i always look to double up my buyin, some times more, and then quit, or if i start to feel that the cards have turned their back on me, i also quit, thats why i love SNG`s if u dont make the top 3 or 2 places u dont get money :D so try SNG`s :D

That's an easy one: leave after you bust out all the fish and there's no one left to play.

Watch out for winner's tilt, and don't go blowing off everything you worked so hard to accumulate. If you don't, you can lose in minutes what it took hours to make. Doesn't matter how good you are or that you've been running like God: never forget how you got that monster stack in the first place. You're not invincible.

I completely agree with you Mr Dan
I also follow this strategy...very well said its only greed that's gets us in the game when we start loosing

What you should be doing, is trying to learn to play deepstacked. You probably have problems with discipline and self control as well.

Hitting and running is just a band aid, it doesn't solve the problem.

There are some exceptions to hit and run, such as:
  • A villain who is way better than you is deep too.
  • You are tired.
  • You are not playing well.
  • The game sucks, no action.
  • There is no money on the table.
  • Edit, forgot one - You have an insane amount of chips, like 500BB+, but even then, if game is good.....

If you are at a good game, and people have $$$, you can really make a killing.

If you are a winning player, you have the strategy figured out, you know the theory, have experience, feel you have an edge, etc., you win X amount of BB/100 or $X/hour. This doesn't mean you win every pot you enter, or you win every session. This means you can reasonably expect to profit in the long term.

The fact that you have trouble losing money when deep is evidence of leaks in your game/tilt issues. Winners tilt/not strong enough player to play deep.

Plus, I don't think you have the right mindset, like what you said in the quote below....

i wanted to stop and leave the table, but i always get this urge to continue playing and hope to get ahead more.

You don't continue to play "hoping to win more", you continue to play because the game is good, people are giving money away, you are in the zone, etc. The money is a byproduct. All we can do is play well. We play because it's +ev. Not to get more $$$. Short term results are irrelevant. The quality of your poker decisions is the most important thing.

So I recommend working on your game. If you want to get better, and win more $$$, put the time and effort in.

Read "The Mental Game of Poker" by Jared Tendler for starters. Read it more than once.

If you have accumulated more than 500BB you will likely have everyone covered and cannot bust in once, so leaving because of this is not really a valid reason for me. If you don't have everyone covered, ref to the first point (A villain who is way better than you is deep too).
On top of it, everyone will be scared of the big stack (even though there is no reason for that in a cash game).
All the other points I agree.

continue to play when you're playing your best poker. not when you're winning or losing, when you're playing well. Once you can no longer play your best, it is time to leave.

I leave the game after a very big win.
I'm not leaving the game directly, but I set a 'finish' to myself.
For example, next time BB or Dealer.

I set a time limit for my session. Usually an hour or two. I only leave a table when I feel it's too tight and no longer profitable. I play four tables at once, so say my time limit is an hour, I could end up playing ten different tables or more if they get too tight or the fish leave. So it depends on the table. I quit playing whenever I've hit my time limit regardless if I'm up or down.
