I am muslim and i am 18 years old and i live with my parents.
Recently i told them that i play poker and i earn like 200$ a month.
They told me that you have become a gambler and they told me to not play as gambling is forbidden in ny relegion.
I tried to convince them that it is not gambling.
But they didnt listened abd they took my system on which i used to play with 12000$ bankroll in it.
What should i do?
Should i give up playing poker?

If you manage to make money through poker, then you might think it's just a job. Because your religion does not forbid you to work.

Buy them something they need or play somewhere else if you make good enough income. You must understand that their reaction is valid because for most poker is lightly losing. But you can't make them to think differently at least for a month maybe 2 years or if ever if you don't provide them something they think are more value than you life. Like free meal or something.

I think you first need to be honest with yourself and admit that Poker IS a form of gambling. Not many players on here are willing to admit that but I'm comfortable with it. Now before you all jump on me, I am NOT saying that Poker is a game of pure chance because it isn't. But it IS a mixture of luck and skill. Winning Poker players are not gambling but losing players definitely are. Fish playing Poker is no different to them sitting down at a blackjack table or roulette wheel. Winning players effectively become their own casino.

I think you should always put family and friends before Poker. If you can't stop playing or don't want to then do everything you can to keep that part of your life separate. If you can't do that, or they will not support you then you will have a big decision to make. Either way you need to admit that Poker has a bad reputation in some countries and faiths. As players we have a duty to admit that our wins come from the losses of others and that this game can and does destroy some people. So your parents have a point and you should respect their opinion, but ultimately the decision is yours. R

First question, and I'm being serious about this, as I'm not Muslim so I certainly will not profess to be knowledgeable about the Quran: Is gambling addressed in your holy book, and if so, its is explicitly or implicitly stated that it is not allowed? I teach the world religions as part of our 7th grade social studies curriculum and Islam is always so difficult to explain with regards to what is stated and the Quran and HOW it is stated! Try explaining to a 12 year-old the difference between explicitly and implicitly stated...

Secondly, I've had this back-and-forth with my wife as well on occasion (not a serious disagreement, she just likes to give me grief every now and then) and I always come back to games with house odds versus games against people. I consider any game with house odds, like Blackjack, Roulette, Craps, slots, etc., to be gambling. On the flip side, I consider card games against others to be just that, a game against other people where you simply have to beat them and not the "house". Are you putting money down? Yes. Can you lose that money? Yes. But I think you're more in control of that outcome in a game like poker versus those other games in a casino.

Not that my opinion will matter to your folks :D ... just trying to give you some fuel to counter their arguments against you playing. But I guess it really does go back to what the Quran might say and how devout you are.

Good luck either way!

Easy, drop your religion... They are all fake anyway, and not needed.

I left home at age 17 got a job and apartment and did what I wanted no more embarrassment when had girlfriend over
Maybe it is time to fly the nest and do what makes you happy time to become a man.
Living under your parents roof it is their house and their rules which you should respect but if you have the means start out in new place that would be my advice.
Religion does not forbid you doing that does it?
Freedom is a great thing good luck to you.:top:

You raised one of the most difficult issues - gambling and religion.
And poker, whatever someone says - it refers to gambling, it's not chess. Of course, not one religion does not approve of gambling. But the world is changing ....
We must always think about the family - and try to find mutual understanding.
Here the choice is yours and only for you.

I've had this discussion before, "is poker a job or gambling?". When you go to work you get paid, when you play poker you have a chance to win or lose, therefore it is a game of chance and of course any game of chance is gambling. .....

Agreed. In games, the only people who are ever really gamblers are the one's who don't know what they're doing.

Knowing it's against their faith, why would you tell your parents? Not very smart thing to do,,,because if you like playing poker, why would you ruin it?(you knew they would object) I think your decision making skills are in question here(prob why your parents are worried),,,luckily your young and will get better at it.;)

I think it's good that he told them. No point in us all being locked away in dark rooms hiding our passions. He has done the right thing. Now it's up to them.
