I have been having a hell of a time in cash games recently. I have been running up pretty big stacks early on in my sessions and then I will get my stack in as an 80% favorite with 1 card to come and get stacked. All of my progress for the evening erased.

Does anyone have advice on how to prevent these situations?

An example is tonight I played in a 1/2 game, I check raised all in on the turn with top 2 pair, got called by a naked flush draw and I got stacked. I was an 81% favorite in that spot.

This actually happens so frequently to me that I have to be doing something wrong. But how is it wrong to get your stack in at 80%? Thanks in advance for any tips.

I wouldn't let it get you down. While it may sound funny, I'm not overly concerned about winning/making money. (Don't get me wrong I do want to both win and make money) I am more concerned however with making the right decisions because as long as I am making the right decisions the rest will eventually fall into place. If you truly are getting your money in as an 80% favorite and consistently losing then, you've simply hit a rough patch. odds say that your luck will change and you are due to even out to that 80% mark at some point in times. The more hands you play like that, the closer to 80% your results should be. Don't be mad that you are making the right moves.... you're bound to hit an upswing at some point.

Golden Rule

I agree. If your constantly geeting outdrawn. You are just having a run of bad luck. When this happens to me i just try to remember in poker you have to get use to losing. If you do not like losing this isnt the game for you. Golden Rule i follow.JUST HAVE FUN. Enjoy the moment, grab some beer and some pretzels relax and enjoy.

Isn't this called variance.
But what is also variance that of every 5 times you go all-in, each with 80% chance of winning, you will loose 1 (on average).
If you do this in a single game, you will have 0 chips after the fifth time you went all-in (on average).
That is the problem of going all-in with less than 100% chance of winning.

Your not explaining anything new. I play the 1/2 quite often. I typically will buy in for 100$ and on a good day or about 30% of the time I will run that 100$ up to 500$ or more. I've done this many of times.

Everything is great when the cards are running in your favor. Your flopping top pair in a raised pot and everyone folds, your hitting your sets in big pots, your hitting your flush on the turn and stacking everyone, your making a full house on the river etc. These are obviously great days.

I can't tell you many days I have ran that 100$ to 300$ or more and all it took was one bad river card. Once that 20% 5 outer or 30% 8 outer hits. It sucks. You will typically a huge portion of your stack if not all of it. You see there is already 300 or 400 in the pot and you make the call regardless, even if you already know your opponent made his hand, the pot just keeps you in and you call knowing your beat.

Now here is my way of defending against this mindset. You should always have a stop/loss amount or a Win/Time amount. For example you win 300$ in the session guess what call it a day. There is always tomorrow. You'll be better prepared and you'll feel good. What your describing is simple variance and many players do not know how to handle variance. When you play poker as long as I have though and you keep track of your stats, sessions etc. You'll understand how it works.

I can't tell your how many times I have gotten it in good All-In or making a huge bet as a 70% or 80% favorite. The unfortunate thing is that 1 in 5 is usually going to hit eventually and you have to hope it's not when your deep stacked.

Granted I haven't played 1-2 NL online in like 8-10 years!!! but back then I really didn't like the 1-2 tables on pokerstars. I preferred $2-4 or .50-1 online as these tended to not have as many callers, tighter and generally easier to read play. If this is casino play or you're just bankrolled for 1-2 online...those flush draws are a good way to make money when they don't hit. You just can't panic when they do hit. Also as per tournament play sometimes it helps to play conservative on the flop, call the bet, or bet for value...and on the turn if he still hasn't hit the flush now you can put added pressure on him to fold because he ONLY has the river left. Some guys will fold there...some folks will always call to the river, however, reducing him to a single river card can really help them to fold. Now say your man is going to call no matter what...you know how he is...so you could go conservative on flop, bet again for value on turn...and if he hits the river...you call it bad luck and fold it right there. Just my 2 cents.

it may be happening that you play many hours in a row, you could rest every 2 days 24 hours ... you rest your mind and reset your game, since the stress of losing often can push you to make wrong calls, and maybe your game has been a bit aggressive after winning some money.

Sounds like variance. There's nothing wrong with getting your money in as a 4:1 favorite!

It's just run bad. The key is not to tilt when these beats happen and get off your game. Your game must be good if you are building big stacks.Maybe another strategy is to leave when you build a big win at a table or at least consider leaving if there is another big stack on the table who risks all your profit from the session.
