In the freeroll' i normally start off real strong get my chips up there then about half way through i start to lose and quick i am normally a semi tight player unless i see other that are tight wads but my i never change how i play through out the tourny. Do you think i should change up once i get closer to the final table? any help would be greatly appreciated

This is your leak.

This is my reply from another thread that I c/p'd.

You may not be making the needed adjustments at the later stages of an MTT. One of the biggest improvements I made was learning to adjust my game.

To simplify things, lets look at SNGs as 2 parts: early stages and late stages.

During the early stages, the goal here is to survive. Blinds are very low and stacks very deep, usually 100BB+. So, at these stages, you can play tight and wait for big hands to accumulate chips. You don't have to take any unnecessary risk with marginal hands, you can limp in with small pairs and suited connectors if you get great odds/implied odds, you can avoid unnecessary coinflip situations, etc.

However, when blinds start increasing, average stacks are no longer deep. The higher the blinds get, the more its costing you to play. Not while the idea is to survive, the goal is to accumulate chips in order to do so. While you could survive in the early stages by just playing a small range of hands and waiting it out, you can not do so at the later stages because the blinds will not allow you do so. At the later stages, small pairs and suited connectors go down in value, while big cards like A high or K high, even with only mid kickers go up in value. Where you would avoid coinflips or maybe 40/60-30/70 situations in the early stages, it would sometimes be correct to do so at the later stages. You want to accumulate chips anyway possible and sometimes you'll have to get lucky in order to do so.

if its a big player freeroll, i tend to be more aggressive and play more hands early on to try and build my stack.. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but more often than not, i'm usually doing pretty darn well when the first break comes along..

after that first break, people start to play a lot tighter.. i too will play tighter, but i dont want to lose my aggressiveness either.. with people getting tighter, its good to stay aggressive ( you'll steal a lot of blinds from this point on ).. table position starts to become a big factor as well with the blinds.. even if you continually raise and get no callers, those blinds add up and the most important thing is you're winning hands.

my play is always changing based on my surroundings.. my chip stack, how many players are in tourney, am i in the money yet? how close am i to the final table?... etc..

you should loosen up on the bubble and near the final table-you need to be always going for the win-playing tight and waiting for hands is just a recipe for disaster-so i think loosening up is the right way to go-but dont play reckless-pick your spots and use position-the_urge27
