This question is a bit general, but bear with me if you can. I have come across this situation a number of times in microstakes games recently, and I don't want to narrow it to a single hand.
Here's the scenario: There's been little action preflop, so the pot is very small (4BB or so) and the effective stacks are high (100BB). I've flopped a gutshot with no overcards, and someone has bet half the pot. Barring something unusual, I've got 4 outs here and no reason to like any other card. I've got no where near the pot odds I need to call but if I could win a stack every time I hit my straight, I'd have way more than the implied odds I need. Obviously the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
How do you play this? I've been folding here generally, unless it looks to be unusually sweet if I hit (for example, 2 callers behind me and no flush potential), in which case I might call. But I feel like I'm leaving money on the table every time I see it hit and watch someone take down a pot with 2 pair. Thoughts?

You should still look at it statistically. The chance of someone having 2 pair when you hit your straight on the turn or river is so small that the reason you feel it might be worth calling every time is because you remember those situations.
What I mean is, each time this happens you think to yourself : "damn i should have called", and you make a mental note. And most of the times it doesnt happen, but because you let it go, you forget this happens way more often (10/11 times with a gutshot draw) than when you hit it.

Its like when you start paying attention to yellow cars on the road. They dont appear often but when you stary paying attention to them you'll notice and remember them a lot more. Even though compared to the other cars there still arent many.

So you should still try to work out whether youre dealing with fish, and evaluate whether theyll call if you hit it. Or in other words, take the implied odds into consideration.

Imo its an easier call when youre deepstacked, but the opponents tendencies still dicatate whether its gonna make you bleed chips or not.

In big bet poker, I'll call that bet once on the flop as the implied odds are so high. Just don't call a turn bet and then fold the river.
