So I've been thinking about playing frequently up at the local poker house down the road. The goal is to start off with a 300$ bankroll (not sure what the limits are now but they used to be low). I'd like to be able to keep some stats on my play, as I think that's the way to stay focused on your game, and to try and improve.

I'm wondering what are some easy stats to keep track of while playing and how you manage to keep track of hands per hour and things like that.

Thanks!

I record the following in a note pad App on my phone when I play live

Time I sit down
Buy-in (which I keep adjusting if I have to top up)
Expenses (I never tip for drinks from my stack)
Time I sit out
Amount I cash out
Finishing position
Final table made

I don't count hands and in tournaments I count break times as part of the tournament time

Right now I just separate tournaments and cash sessions.

For next year I'll be separating things by game type and game levels (ie $1/$2 NL, $2/$5 NL, $3/$6 LO8)

Put all this stuff in a spreadsheet.

So I have a handle on my win rates, winning sessions, % of cashing tournaments, FT's made etc.

Are you talking stats as in vpip/pfr/3bet etc? Or are you talking stats as in profit/loss, hours played etc?

If it's the former, I know someone who's currently developing an android app to track those things. That could possibly be of benefit to you. I could always send him a message and ask him to get in touch.

+1 to the note pad on the smart phone.... That's what I used for the tourny last night which was my first there in a long time though i've been sharpening up online. I recorded: date, BI $25, entrants 28, starting chips $20k, my finish place 16/28, and my last hand (as this will sum up your event haha)
This game was UBER LAG, people raising 10xbb with 4 6 off, and callers of 4 5 off, really sick game. I just laid back and watched it all go down. after missing a few flops and not wanting to throw down, i finally caught AQs and shoved for a triple up right before the 1st break. 2nd hour cards went friggin dead and I couldn't get into a pot to make a move or steal blinds on the tighter players cause every pot was raised 10xbb preflop by aggrodonks haha. Just before the 2nd break (blinds escalating quickly 1k/2k now) I caught AJs, UTG had raised 3xbb and I shoved on him the first hand i've played practically the whole hour, I had a little over 20k which i thought was enough FE for him to lay down his Ace rag, but no... he calls with A 8, which im happy about, I want them to make that call, but I got unlucky on the flop and he flopped two pair Aces and 8's and I couldn't run him down to save my ass

If there's one thing I know about poker... you can not beat LUCK... so better luck next time right?

@jonny- I would like to be a little more in detail when playing cash there. An app for smartphone would be friggin sweet! I have iphone, so android app of your friends wouldn't work out for me unfortunately but it sounds sweet! But it would be nice to be able to keep stats like vpip/bb100/#ofhands (maybe hourly average?)/etc.

Found out they're running $1/$2 NLcap for the main game now, $60min/$200max with a $400cap. Makes my $300 bank a little more risky with only about 5BI of $60. Usually there's only one table goin on, but i've seen 2-3 in the past. Hopin to catch a decent tournament win there and build my roll to 500$ before I jump into that game

Are there no other games running? 5 BI's of 30BB is not very stable. You ideally want full BI's of 100BB, especially live cos they open for like 5-8BB.

typically no, it's a charity poker house here locally, not casino, so whatever is going is usually the only game to play. You can sign up to start a new table of a different game/limit but unless its really busy you get one option haha.

Yeah i know min buy in isnt ideal... i was thinking 80-100 would be better to play. I know I don't get as many hands that way at 40-50BB and one beat will leave me hurtin if i'm committed and wrong, but the community of players is so small i feel once i get to know their patterns i'll be able to figure the table out. They are mostly LAG, so when you have a monster you get paid off. Some of them have just simply moved their home games to the poker house haha. I know several of them from playin there before and they'll be nothing all the way to the river, gotta keep em honest!

I'm working on the IPhone version atm. I've been damn slow with it as poker and driving lessons take up most my time. Once I've made supernova I should have more time to put in to programming it without spending every waking hour collecting VPPs :p
