To Wait or Not to Wait

Good day,

I'm just doing a quick post on waiting for the big blind during cash games. There is a very legitimate reason for waiting. Most importantly as it doesn't make sense to pay a blind when it isn't going to buy you a full orbit. This makes sense, but there are exceptions. Do you always wait? I don't.

Here's why:

Reason 1. - I like to post the extra blind early because it gives me the table image of a player who 'can't wait to get their chips in' so players mistakenly put me on a weak range. So if I pick up a monster in the first few hands I'll be getting action with it.

Reason 2. - Collecting information. I post my first blind early so that I can collect HUD data for an extra few hands. This gives me a better impression of opponents by the time I do pick up a decent hand. Of course my first priority is to observe how everyone is playing, ranges etc but I enjoy collecting data for 1 whole orbit.I know it's a small sample anyway, but its usefulness is non-zero.

Reason 3.
- Situational considerations. Like having position on maniacs in EP who are having their 10 year open-shove reunion. I don't wait for the button when I can get a call in with a non-nutted decent equity hand. In such a case I will post the extra blind and get myself into the game quickly.

What do you think? I don't mind if you agree or not, would just be interesting to hear your views.

Thanks

G

I would wait and read the other players..... However, as the game progresses the players are subject to be under more pressure. Some will go on tilt, and they are easier to beat then.
Your system may work on low level games. But, when ya hit the big games, your system will not work as well, I think....

All points are valid in a sense. However, you need to have win rate close on two digits for those reasons to be profitable enough to actually make it +EV reasons.

Let say you can play 20% when you complete, so 80% of times you waste your bb. Then let say you play 1.5 hours, 75 hands per hour, that is -0.71bb/100 for your win rate. Then let say your win rate is around 1bb/100, and you just donated 70% of your income.

You can do that later ;) when you are close to graduating a level.

I do it almost all the time even though it's a negative play. Why? Because if someone is dumb enough to draw a conclusion about what type of poker player I am based upon only this information then I want to play against those people.

1. Chances are you are not going to pick up a monster in the first few hands so you are kind of gambling. Also people can tell what kind of player you are within 2 orbits.

2. The benefits of getting 3-4 extra hands of information is not worth 1bb in the long run. Those 3-4 hands are pretty moot once you have 50+ hands on someone.

3. I can see this one if you KNOW their is an absolute whale at the table but you still need to actually make a hand for this to happen.

All in all everything you posted has merit, but it is very short term thinking and isn't beneficial to you in the long run.

Cheers

Excellent points guys, thanks very much. When you put it in terms of bb/100, it seems I need to review this with fresh eyes. Of course there will be times when jumping in is neccesary but it will be the exception rather than the norm.

Nice one
