Its like im either crushing everyone in my path or im getting absolutely destroyed. Do any of just hate 6 max because of the variance? I played a little 9-handed to start with, as every player does, then tried 6 max once and have stayed there ever since. But the variance is really getting to me now. What do you guys play/ prefer. Can you give pros and cons for each?

Think its time I went back to 9-handed for a bit...

I don't play much cash games at the moment (plan to start more) but a buddy of mine does, and he goes on some pretty crazy swings like you describe. He is currently on a massive downswing losing almost 20 buyins, lol.

your likely playing too many hands/ too wide a range if your results are very skewy

Depends on your style that dictates the variance. Well of course 6max is high variance as you're opening more hands, but think of it like playing a big chiplead at a final table. You're going to attack your opponents trying to be a runaway chiplead (when you have a huge amount of chips).

If you play LAG, more variance will come, but you can outplay your opponents post-flop and get paid more with you good hands. If you play TAG, then less variance will come, but you will be a bit selective. I advise using a HUD like Pokertracker or Holdem Manager if you haven't already done so, and pick the tables that are the most fishy and therefore earning you the most money.

I believe that 6-max has lower varience than full ring (at least at microstakes). Way too many fishy players at FR calling 3bets with random hands catching two pair/random straight draw with 2 gapers. :D

no, this is just not the case

you don't play anywhere near as wide of ranges 9 handed so variance is lower

HU is more variant, then short handed, then 6 max, then full ring

this is much truer !

6max esp zoom can be sould destroying (trust me)

i used to love 6max and loved the aggression in the game as i used to be confident in big pots. no it seems that the games have changed a lot where u finding that tptk just isnt good enough by the river. Even two pair at the river can get u in a lot of trouble.

i recently switched to fr and after playing 20k+ hands at 25 and 50nl its much less variant.
u can actually construct a range for opponents for positions which has got increasingly harder at 6 max due to the fact that ppl dont take position as seriously in 6max

hope this helps a bit :)

The variance shouldn't be a problem if you are properly bankrolled

When you're in the mood for more action and are willing to accept that it comes with more variance, play 6max. Otherwise, play FR.

I'd rather play at a 6max, it's a lot more fun, and there's less cards out against you.

Variance must be higher at 6-max, I was just wondering today whether 6-max is better for me than 9-max, in NLHE at least :)

No doubt 9-max or better yet 10-max is better for me in Omaha hi-lo :)

But maybe NLHE is different for me :)

the funny thing is i really seem to play o8 better 3 handed idk what it is but seems to be my sweat spot, once we get a lot of players and a lot of limpers i think i just go into NLHE attack them mode too much
