Was playing 1-2 NL table and had notice a couple hands with a curious bet $5 on the turn when the pot was $120 and was heads up
In one instance it turned out the underbettor had a monster hand and wanted action
In the other instance it turned out the underbettor had a marginal hand and making a blocker bet and ready to fold if there was a massive raise

Sounds about right. I use both types of bets. When I got middle or low pair, bet min to see if there is action. I have a monster with more than 3 people in the pot then I want them to hang around.

Bet consistently..

If I had the nuts say ak-8 rainbow with top 2 and wanted action I would simply check there is no reason to bet 5 dollars into a 120 dollar pot. If I had 8-10 off and wanted to make a probe bet I would bet 40 make it look like a value bet and is some cases everyone folds. This is why nl poker is about position and reads with some scenarios being check that bottom pair utg If I sense I'm beat and if for some reason doofis wants to bet 5 for action with ak I call all day and trip up on the tun or river making him look like an idiot. Most of the time With top 2 ak in a 120 pot I would bet 80 and take it down especially if the board was coordinated,or suited in any way and occasionally check or bet thin on weak boards and risk him tripping up,thin meaning 40..

90% of the time ak top 2 bet out 80% of the pot everytime and hands like a-5 suited with top pair and 2 suits check or call all day even in position unless it's a huge over bet then it could be a set or a bad player in this case shove it.

i think under betting at certain times can confuse some ppl as to what your hole cards are-its a useful tool when done at the right time

The underbet is uncommon but it does make me think why so little ?
The instance when the underbettor hand was marginal , he was first to act and I had position and I sense now he didn't not want to call a big bet so it was a classic blocker bet Now that I think I made a small raise that he called, I should have made a bigger raise
The other instance when the underbettor had flop a top set on the flop and was in position It was checked to him and he underbet to get action and hoping others might hit something

Bet sizing is more art than science but generally you have to think about the various types of hands that your opponents can have and what they will do with said hands vs different bet sizings. I don't really ever bet 5% of pot but I'll frequently wager anywhere from 1/4 to full pot or even over bet if I am feeling frisky.

Underbetting the flop is a great way to bluff without using much money to do so.
Some fish are so wrapped up in strategy, that they pride themselves on folding winners when they suspect you of having the nuts; fish always think someone else has the nuts.
An underbet might work in signalling to them massive confidence in your hand.

As long as it's a balanced strategy, it can be effective.

I really don't like the super small underbets or min bets. I see this a lot in cash games and you really can't get enough value to make this a successful play. You won't get raised a lot unless the other person has complete air or a really strong hand. And when someone makes this bet and has a decent hand, what do you do when you get raised? You would make more money by checking and letting your opponent fire.
