Hi guys,

Just finished watching this stream https://youtu.be/iOJMS11OJaI (first hand starts at 55 minutes, Dwan doesn’t start playing until 30 mins later or so, Jungleman even later).

This was a €1,000,000 buy in cash game in Montenegro that happened the other night with (for me) a lot of fresh faces mixed in with some of the guys who I’ve missed seeing play so much over time!

The hands were sick, with one pot reaching over €2,000,000! If anyone hasn’t watched (at least the highlights) already I would strongly recommend. The commentary from Dwan, and then later nananoko is also great.

Watching Ivey, Dwan (after he finishes commentating) and Antonius back at the table was such an amazing feeling. However it was far from an easy ride for any of them. For me, this was quite surprising to see as I’m not too familiar with what’s going on with poker in Asia and other areas and so perhaps naïvely assumed a lower-skill level of the unfamiliar names.

Overall, it was a great watch. On the other hand I found it odd how such a good venue with such an amazing line-up of characters didn’t get that much exposure?

So, for my question: what is NLH like in Asia now and what do you guys think the future holds for poker there? Also, what is the skill level in different parts of Asia, and potentially other parts of the world (I get that it may end up generalising player styles too far but I just want a rough understanding).

I Think unless it gets banned (as is the case in many Asian counties) it will grow a lot. I am not sure though that Holdem is gonna be the mainstream game. It has pretty much been solved and as soon as bots start flooding (more than now) servers, sites have to invest a lot more in protection and therefore raise the rake, making it impossible to profit (only applies online obviously).

As for their play style, I think everyone is playing tight, so there you go, now you know over 4 billion people's play styles :)

Oh boy what an entertaining game, I did only watch one hour highlight, but it was quite hilarious time to time, example float with J9-high no draws 500k euros pot, and tom dawn pretending to drink whiskey and two ?Chinese? guys pretending to be drunk or whatever =D

I was so excited to watch Ivey and Dwan making some moves. But to be honest except three or four nice pots, they were playing real tight. And how else can you do when you are playing against spewy asian guys really? Its like playing against calling station donks, bluffing doesnt get them off the pot that easily. Also Ivey lost some big money and he was sitting out the whole time waiting for some premium hands, that never came.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Asian vegas = Macau right? And yeah fair point, would be silly to underestimate such a vast amount of people especially when we stereotype them often as geniuses lol

Yeah was a shame that Ivey was forced to nit it up. I just felt like the whole dynamic of the game was really different to usual. Nonetheless was awesome to see :)

Hahaha, if you only watched the highlights then I’m not sure you would have seen it but Ivey lit up a huge cigar and was just chilling the majority of the game. Just waiting for the Aces that didn’t come lol. I know what you mean though, the pots just grew so quickly and the amount of money being thrown about was sickening at times!

I wouldn’t go as far to say solved, but it very possibly will be in the near future which is intriguing yet scary. Everything you say makes good sense, and maybe that is why other types of poker such as short-deck are really growing over there. Online is dying, bots and collusion is killing it along with the ever-increasing rake. The likelihood is that NLH will just revert to live, and hopefully with more and more Asian players it will still stay fun.

Vietnam has recently made poker legal again I believe, but only to foreigners. I guess for us to categorise the whole of Asia on anything is pretty difficult considering laws and norms change so much from country to country. But overall the trend is growing and demand for online gambling is only going to increase. I think this (excluding bots or geniuses with a high IQ) influx of players will only be good for the poker world, specifically offline :)
