I've been playing 2nl for AGES now and I have like over 100 buyins for 5nl, so I'm easily rolled for it. I mean my rate at 2nl is alright at like 15bb/100 so I should also be able to win easily at 5nl. But for some reason I just don't have the guts to move up properly. Like I kinda imagine the money I could lose in the short term, like it's easy to lose 4BI due to variance once in a while at 2nl which is only like 8 bucks, but 4BI at 5nl is 20 bucks and that loss seems much more to me since I'm only starting out at uni (even though it's just taking a little. I'm sure in the long term I'll be able to easily beat the limit, but right now I'll play a few hands and then quit cos I'm scared to lose it all, and right now I don't really feel comfortable playing with blinds 2.5x bigger than I'm used to.

I was wondering if anyone here could give me some advice/motivation for how I can make moving up seem less daunting? I've been at 2nl for far too long and I know I can't stay there forever!

In poker you must not be guided by emotions because it makes you play bad and affect your decisions. However if you sentis not ready to level up, it is best to keep the current level and targets high volume of hands to improve your game and be safer.
Also if you are in banking to level and the current level're winning player hands in a volume that slowly got up to the next level.
Empeza trying to play half and half of each level to adapt to the new level

Set yourself a 2 buyin stop loss per session while you are starting out.

Scared money is the only real difference you will encounter all the way up the buy-in ladder. If you are beating the 2nl game at 15bb/100, you own that game. It is harder to beat 2nl than it will be to beat 5nl or higher. But not if you are playing scared.

So from this point on, try this experiment;

You take your $500 br and keep building it via the 2nl game, and use those profits for moving up. But you must learn how to be totally non committed to that money, and instead be totally committed to you game.

A good player will play a high BI game with the same mental attitude as someone playing play money, i.e. the money doesn't matter.

You could also test the waters playing the 2nl deep games where you can buyin for 5$ and they have ante's. It is a different game with 250bb vs 100bb stacks but it is still 2nl and the fish are still fish so although its a bigger buyin it will give you the feel of having 5$ on the table but still only playing for 2nl blinds etc.

This would be a good transition to feeling more comfortable with more money on the table so that it could help you not feel as scared when you move up to 5nl...........also as tenbob said you could simply implement a stop-loss so that if you lose 2 buyins at 5nl then drop back to 2nl until you feel ready to take another crack at the step up.

Good Luck, and btw a very nice br especially if you have been playing only 2nl and started from anything small.....lots of people would play 25nl considered rolled with 500$ but its all about comfort and being able to drop down if things arn't going well.....just keep taking some shots and you will eventually feel more comfortable there, but as has been stated if your beating 2nl at 15bb/100 (making assumption its probably a large sample) then you shouldn't have too much trouble at 5nl.

Mottom. It is still poker. Take a 10BI shot at 5NL playing less table until you feel confortable. Be aware that there are more nits and the regs are somewhat more aggressive. Not much but they are learning to 3bet even though most of the time they do not know exactly what they are doing. Fish are still fish but they are less now. A lot less. You need to table select a lot more. Play the usual game and do not force your way through like I saw a lot of players that move up do. I moved up to 5NL with my challenge and dropped to 10 tables at the beginning. There are not that many maniacs , mostly 40/10 fish, or 45/20 fish and lots and lots of regs and nits.
Do not worry about being a BR nit. A big BR for a lvl gives you the confort to learn without pressure . Any time you drop few BI down you can move back down and rebuild the BR.

Why move up if you are beating your current level.

I rather use my winnings at mtt and might score big which every poker player dreams.

Thanks for all the great advice guys! I've tried the deep 1c/2c games don't really like them tho cos of all the antes...I like the idea of setting myself a 2BI stop loss I think that's what I'll do, but I'll have to be strict with it and not go on tilt. I'm also gonna have to learn to desensitize myself to the value of money and treat it just like it's part of my bankroll as a whole. Gonna try a couple of 5nl games today and see how it goes!

I play micro limits, after each jump to the next level, come to bankruptcy. The higher the level, the better player?

Mostly tilt. If you are beating one lvl you should be able to be at least break even at the next lvl. But as i said. A lot of players when jump a lvl , try to force their way and make stupid plays while the correct play is to tighten up until they gather a decent number of hands, and become confortable.
