Hello everyone,

I want to ask especially in cash games how to beat calling stations to seem to outflop good hands.

For example opponent has 5 and 4 and I have AJ and I raise 3x big blind and get called with the flop 5A4 and lose my bankroll over that.

How to combat these players to beat them?

Any tips would be helpful.

Well to combat it first you have to understand why this person has became a"Calling Station". Perhaps they to have felt what you now feel and have changed their style to play more small ball poker. Maybe they just have a great bankroll and are able to take more risks than most players (such as yourself). Keep in mind that Daniel Negreanu has made a fortune playing in this manner. So to combat it, is there really a stragety for that (I think not).

You need to play tighter, flop a really good hand like 2 pairs or better and the just pot it on every street till you have all his money. No easier or better way to beat calling stations.

Never be tired of these players, these players are going to be printing money to you.

Yea they can be very annoying because one day no matter how good you play they just keep beating you with questionable hands. Just make a note on them and save them for later. Never go at them when the boards not in your favour as they will keep calling you down, bind your time and play only when you look like you are ahead and if they ever raise you when you just have a pair, respect they probably have 2 pair or a set as calling stations very rarely raise without having it.

When I do play cash I watch the table to spot the calling stations, and join in and try to get them involved with me when I seem to have the best of it, and I love it when there is 2 at the same table. I make a note and always look for them in the lobby so I play with them again.

Just don't play fancy poker and never bluff a calling station!

Calling stations are great, just be patient, wait for a good hand and bet away, they'll call and you profit.

you can only play your big hands against them and when u hit play aggressive to them, and when u don't fold them, its frustrating for sure, there's always a better spot than pushing with nothing on someone that's more than likely going to call.
don't let them push you to gamble, let them do the gambling.
If its an all in, nothing more than u can do than get it in good,

Hello my advice is if you can not beat them join them start playing with 7 cards in your holdem game instead of 2 cards good luck:evil:

The only way to beat them as you could guess ) is to have a better hand. But if you are not sure that your hand is strong enough then play pot control. don't put all your stack in the middle of the table having top pair. Instead watch the opponent's action, what he does. And play accordingly. Most of the time top pair is enough but not all the time. And why do you call them calling stations? What should he do in that particular situation when he got two pairs and you keep betting? You pay him off and that is what he exactly needs.

Calling stations are the best!! Here are some tips on how to beat them.

1- Bet bigger preflop with your good hands. Make them pay premium price to see the flop with their speculative hands. They will miss more flops than they will hit normally.

2- When you do hit the flop, bet bigger than normal against these players. Make them pay to suck out.

3- When bad turn and river cards come out, slow down.

4- When they make a big donk bet into, that usually means they got there. Just fold.

Hope this helps, good luck out there!

They are great, calling station fill the pot.

To learn more, I sometimes keep calling, knowing I'll loose, because I want to see my opponents hand.

Hey. They very often use a slowplay. But you were right that you bet a lot in all the streets. You just got into his upper range. That happens. Just never bluff, but bet with any hand that you think is better than his hand. You can even bet an overbet (1.5PSB) on the turn if there is a dangerous flop and you have a monster hand. In cheap tournaments sometimes I just make all-in on the turn with a good hand. And it works! Even a few opponents make a call with a draw or top pair.

Play tight preflop. Consider raising to 4 or 5x instead of 3x.
Did you hit on the flop? bet your hand aggressively and with confidence. Don't settle for a 30% CBet, pump that up to like 70% or something like that over the future streets and extract more value from calling stations that way.

One way to play against calling station is controlling the pot size and minimize your lost if he does hit. usually if they bet big on the river then most likely they hit their outs. So, it is painful but sometimes you just have to cut your loses.

I was playing a cash game yesterday and 5 bet my AA. Calling station hit 2 pair with his 3/7o on the flop and cleans my clock. Very frustrating.

Playing against calling stations, should tighten your range, increase your raise size, and when you make a good hand or a monster - take them to value town. If they show signs of strength and you have anything less than top-top, you may want to consider folding or drawing, rather than raising.

Im not exactly sure if tightening your range and increasing your raise sizes would make your range look more polarized to the table, but it will be very beneficial against calling stations.

Tighten your range, be aggressive and don't tilt over it. They will make you more than they lose you

Think on the long run. On the long run, if your math is correct, you will win more. Call stations usually just sit for half hour, lose all their stack, then leave.

I wish I could face more call stations. Most of anybody hands will be bad, and they call with any hand, so they will lose most of their stacks.

Just don't try fancy bluffs or plays against them. Of course they'll just call. Just wait for a good hand or the nuts and take all their money.

No matter how much you try to fight the players who have 54, 65, and playing these cards you will never succeed, if you do all-in preflop. And I often play these cards.

First thing that stands out is why are you all in with two aces Jack high. How do you lose your stack with that hand? You need to exercise pot control.Playing bad players can be very tough if you arent getting cards, you cant bluff them really, that is micro stakes in a nutshell= waiting to get cards and some fool loses his stack with a pair of aces jack high. (that was a low blow, but seriously, you are on the wrong side of that equation) You lose your stack when you have an ace high flush and the fool catches a boat on the river, not with a pair of aces...

Calling a small raise with speculative hands is often a good play. Expect it. Don't over value one pair hands. Check one street. Reduce bet sizes vs players that call wide. You will get more calls from hands you beat and lose less when they stumble into 2 pair with K3 and similar junk. You can still bet more when you have a big hand. They won't notice.

You can also bet BIG pre flop to create an easy to play pot on The flop. This is high variance, but profitable.

Counterfeit is sweet when the station is gold.

Based on the junk range of the Station overs like QQ have huge leverage and are much better than aj offsuit. If the Station flops 2 pairs on 45-9 and just calls your bets to what you feel is the best hand then you have some outs even though he out flopped you, It's great when the river is a 9 and your 2 pair Counterfeits his and even better with the flop goes Q-4-5-j-5.. Aj is a gapping drawing hand in fact in many ways 45 is better because at least it's connected. Now aj suited is nice, but what can you flop against station to where they will continue calling? If it rolls J-J-9 a 56- to a-2 station will just check fold here and if it's a spade draw you have to rely on him having the lower flush less likely to occur.

Whats more likely to occur against stations is what I call differential range from him to you. Better hands like 77-to KK play huge against stations. They will call with weak aces so flops like A-7-3 gives you % bonus points vs his pair or 2 pairs and if it's Q-5-9 they Might just call down with middle pair and catch that 2 pair on the river and dump to your set. The great thing about playing with these cards is when you miss your set and the flop goes A-4-8 and you have 77 to kk you can fold assuming he might have it while the pot is still small, or peel for the turn and if it's an ace call en down as it's now less probable they have trips when you hold overs to bottom and middle pair.

If you are losing your bankroll with hands like top pair medium kicker, I would ask, Who is the station? You should evaluate the hands you are playing and make sure you are not overvaluing your hands. AJ is fine to open with, but its not a super strong pre flop hand, so proceed with caution and pot control TPMK. Calling stations don't generally inflate the pot. When they do, you're no good, just fold.

Calling stations should be great to play against. Take them to value town with TPTK and better, but that doesn't mean get it in. Save that for when you make a really big hand like a set. Its ok to small ball them until you make your nut hand. Also, accept that sometimes the station will win the hand and even have a good day. If they never have good days, they won't keep playing, so view their good days as good for future games.
