If you're playing live at a casino or online without a HUD, then what are some basic tips to identify whether a villain is a nit, tag, lag, or fish?

I'm having some trouble categorizing players I'm playing against because I rarely get to see the cards unless there's a showdown. This ends up meaning that I currently play in a way as though I'm up against a bunch of unknown players. But I know this strategy is suboptimal if I had confidence in identifying the player types and could exploit their tendencies better.

Do you just keep track of who is entering the pot often to categorize a lag? If a player folds a lot to barrels postflop, does that mean they are a nit?

How long do you have to play with someone before you can categorize them into one of the types?

Sorry if this is a very basic question, but this concept is giving me a lot of trouble.

Thanks for your help!

Fish:
open limping
missing value bets
losing value with top of range by being le super tricky xD
peeling to river without odds
being a station for no reason (no draws missed)
makes bluffs where they rep no hands
Nit:
super tight pre
check folds cbettable flops even with image
Tag:
bet folds
spotted semibluff raising and barreling
Lag:
a Tag with a broken fold button
essentially an aggro fish running good unless you're playing high stakes and its 2008

One trick i say to myself.

1. If im looking at one guy more than the others then they are in too many hands. I can then value bet lighter against these guys.

2. If u see someone never in the hand its the exact opposite.

3. Pay attention to their cards at showdown.

4. How did those players get to showdown did they win a big pot with avg holding or top?

5. Often casino regs will chat to each other. So its easy to pickup

6. Tilt talk.

7. Body language.

There u go

In my experience, it is better to play poker with strong hands and position, if you can't determine who is sitting in front of you, and eventually you will begin to determine where the fish are and where the experienced player.

There are free huds out there, I can't stress to get one and work it out yourself enough. There are many player types and learning to spot them and play efficiently against them is important to maximising your expectation.
