Hi Folks,

I have been beavering away on the € 5 NL table at pokerstars. It took me 2 hours to build my buy in from € 5 to € 7, then I lost the lost to a couple of hands where I flopped great hands but didn't play right.

I lost two all-ins when I thought I was ahead (one hand I flopped a full hous, only for the villain to get his full house on the river, better than mine)

My problem is that I seem to either raise too much and everyone folds, or don't raise enough (or play correctly) so weak hands see no problem hanging around for the one river card they need.

I am happy so far with my pre-flop play, but could really do with some pointers on post flop play.

Can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Would it help if I posted my the two hands that killed me for you guys to have a look at ?

Cheers,

NM

Here we go, warts'n'all....

I know I completely misplayed this, I thought I would just walk to the river and see if I could induce some betting against me I could just call out. But, small Full House is vulnerable, and I just didn't see it.

H1 - fold pre but postlfop looks fine, I wouldn't say you played it badly you were just beaten by one of the only two hands that could beat you (77 and 75), fine to get it in on the river as you beat 44, 22, 5X, straights and maybe some badly played over pairs.

H2 - Could raise the flop as it's pretty wet, but calling and keeping his range wide isn't terrible. Again, you didn't play it badly as you got it in on the turn with the best hand and unfortunately the river was unlucky for you.

First hand. Fold preflop. I do not play FR but i think a beginner should only open premium hands from early positions. AA, KK,QQ, JJ, TT,AK, AQs. It does not matter that you've been bad beat postflop. You do not have to be a genious to play a flopped Full House at 5NL.
Second hand. You are at 5NL. Make it a litle bigger preflop from early position. It is at the bottom of the range you should play from there but that does not matter. And by the way. The only real bad player there (MP) that you can exploit has position on you most of the time. Quit table and search for a better one.
Actually i would advise you read some about basic poker. Crushing the Micros by blackrain79 is adressed exactely to players like you.

Well, I wouldn't say I am a beginner, I have been fairly successful ocaisional 200NL casino player, but online is tougher am on the .02/.05 table as a challenge to manage my bankroll and play to the next level (I'm blogging about it).

I am reading books and have a subscription to deuces cracked, plus I am posting here for tips. I also have PokerTracker in my corner. Currently I am practicing stealing and barrelling, I don't mind losing these hands if I am learning from my mistakes.

I would probably describe myself as a TAGFish.... I tell you this as it may help you understand my play, it's not beginner play - for example, my full house hand I loosened up on a fishy table and caught a monster flop (so i thought), normally there is no way I would play 54.

My big opening hands usually I do OK with, or completely suck out against really fishy calls (though I am happy how I play them). Likewise, bad hands are easy to fold. It's the middle hands, where I start well, and end up gifting my stack when I really should be filling my boots.

Thanks for the advice though, it is very helpful.
