Hey guys, I recently picked up PLO and a playing some micro-stakes cash games on Bovada. I know the basics of the game and have even read some pretty in-depth guides for playing pre and post flop, but am still a huge newbie at the game. Anyone have any nice tips for me starting my journey into the highly profitable PLO game of poker? Ty!

Play hands that can make the nuts or big draws to the nuts. Don't overvalue aces or even two pair and low sets aren't the nuts either. Post flop if you haven't got the nuts or near nuts or a big draw to the nuts then don't invest any money into the pot.

don't try and invest much money set mining with pairs under "a pair of eights".
Even if you hit a set you might be up against higher sets.
And don't be aggressive with a set until the river when u know you got the best hand. You can be aggressive with strong draws on the other hand. Play cards that can make broadway aggressive pre flop. Play small flushes conservatively.

Its all about pot odds and implied odds.

Its all about nuts/semi-nuts.

Lastly, its all about big draws and small draws. Thats why, luck is a huge factor here.

Micros - position is EVERYTHING. Throw out the disconnected hands early on. Early you want double suited with high rankers, you want four way connectors or very close, or you want double pairs. Late position, you can be in the hand with almost anything, you can be raising pot sized pre-flop anything with drawing power or double paired.

Reason being, people call basically everything in PLO, which evens out everyone's equity. All the play is post-flop, and having position means you can make informed decisions.

Don't be a fish. Qualify your hands to the good shit early on. K7suited J 4 off is not a great hand. Playable from late position, but trash from early. Reason being, PLO has TERRIBLE reverse implied odds. So even though you may see your suit go by as the cards come out, that flush will bankrupt you when someone else has the A high flush or if the board pairs. You may think your missing prime flops but you may actually be saving loads of money by having folded your garbage.

Late position you can get loose with your raises. Here's why: you have position and everyone's calling, so with close to even equity you actually have the edge. If you raise a lot, people will start re-raising, and this is where pre-flop value starts to show up. AAKK is a GREAT hand - against one (maybe two) opponents. It's not really fantastic against more though. You want to get all your chips in against one opponent ideally with that kind of hand. Or you want position with hands like 789T where you can outplay one opponent.

I kind of got interested in PLO watching the Joe Ingram podcasts. At some point i would like to try playing it, but kind of wanted to find a good intro book first, just to learn hands etc. i know they make a PLO version of Leakbuster, it has helped me a lot with cash games, so probably plan to pick that up also.

Looks like bluff gave you a decent link with some solid info.

Best advice - HE and O8 are two different beasts ;)

Play the nuts, or as close to the nuts, as possible in O8. Trips rarely win. Set over set happens a lot, and so does flush over flush. The hand usually changes dramatically on the turn. Position means even more in O8.

I agree with him except the part with aces, don't be scared to raise all-in AAxx on dry boards

If it is PLO6 so in that case I agree

i find myself raising in position with good hands missing the flop always !! so i end up limping in , i played 300 hands earlier today and if i raised with good equity to my hand ,by the flop it had dropped to nothing ,as i said i find myself limping in a lot , i know ths lets in more players but im sick of raising with great hands and missing , i will be called by dreadful hands and they will win ,im trying not to be results based , but i think thats bulltish ,why bother playing if your not results based , how can you play if you dont care about winning ? what do you focus on ? how can you competetive and non results based , im a bit baffled by all that its counter intuitive
