I am new to this type of tournament and was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on when is a good strategy to actually do the add on?

Not sure if more info is needed as I said I am new to the rebuy concept.

Looking for the basics here.

Thanks

It depends on your style, but I think it is fairly neutral EV to add on at the start.

For me it is a matter of how serious I am about the tourney.

I usually play rebuys to blow off steam and I may not be playing well and just want to quit after my first bust.

Sometimes I take the max addon sometimes I skip it. I have had great success both ways (mind you this in only in the $1 rebuys on UB but I have made over 1600 in them).

My personal philosophy is that you should not play any differently in a rebuy tourney than a regular tourney. You should always take +$EV spots for all your chips.

But you must recognize that your opponents may be much looser in a rebuy so calling a 3 way allin with 10 10 may be plus $ EV (I have done this in one before and quadrupled my stack).

Adding on will double your chances up winning, but it is also doubling your buyin, so I think it is a wash.

If I bust later in a rebuy tourney and decide to play on I will definitely add on to keep up with the increasing blinds. If I can buy in for 50bbs instead of 25 I think this improves my odds because I won't be as rushed.

In this tourney (going on right now) there was only one add on and it was at the first break. I had 14K in chips at the time so I didn;t see what adding 2K in chips more would do for another $1. Did I make the right choice?

I am currently at 31K chips going strong.

I virtually always take the addon at the break. It gives you an extra margin of safety from busting.

Rebuys & add-ons have probably done the most damage to my BR.

So I proposed to myself a new way of thinking about them. Over time I probably average 4 entries per contest. So if the original entry is $5+.50, I probably average $20 per event.

Once I realized this, I decided this is not something I am comfortable with, and do not want to exceed $15 per event, meaning I have to start at the $3 or $4 range. This was a psychological blow to me, as I'm delusional and believe myself to be better than $3 or $4 games. But the truth was staring me in the face!

So, I suggest you play these at 1/4 the level you normally would in a non rebuy event, until you get a good feel about how you yourself deal with the overextension of your bankroll.

I have heard alot of different theories on rebuys and addon tournies. Some say if you are buying into a rebuy and addon tourney you should be prepared to have 5- 10 rebuys in your bankroll and be prepared to do so because so many will play the allin AK or high pockets. I have seen this on every poker site I have ever played on. In a rebuy or addon tourney once in a while I will see few players that know what they are doing and know how to play their cards. If you are going to rebuy or addon in a tourney. You need to look at a few factors.

1. are looking to win or just cash.
2. at time of addon where do you stand.
3. How are the overall payouts. Rebuying and adding on are you putting more in than you are getting out of it?
4. What kind of table image and what kind of table are you at. Rammin jammin or tight. Have been able to establih you are playing string and take down some pots preflop when blinds and antes are high.

good luck

i was wondering the same thing, good post. i found some great advice and answers. i've played in a few, usually stay away when BR is low, since they do tend to play looser and lots of rebuys. but an addon when your doing well can only help as far as i'm concerned, and if your doing lousy nada, get out because it never helped me that much to keep rebuying.

I try not to play too many re-buys. People get way to crazy when they know they can re-buy. What I really don't understand are the idiots that re-buy in a freeroll. I'm amazed at how many do. I was playing one the other day on bodog and this one guy did atleast 5 or re-buys while i was there and I think he even did an add on. I did'nt know u could do add-on on the bodog freeroll but, I don't remember him winning a hand and his stack went up. Talk about having too much time and money to waste.

Addons.....

I will USUALLY, NOT always, but usually try NOT to re-buy until the 1st break. 1st, because the rebuy tournys I have played in will only allow a rebuy if you are at or fall below what ever your opening stack size is/was. I know many players like to rebuy right from the jump before play begins. They think having all those extra chips in the begining is a great advantage. The only advantage I see is it is faster and easier to get them upfront, before they drop back down to the level they started at. And because I like the FUN aspect of the game, I like seeing if I can make it to the 1st break w/out rebuying. It says something to me if I can go that far and still keep my stack above my starting position. Keeps my play sharper, I think. BUT at the 1st break I will, ivariabley, add-on then---double if it's allowed (maney time it is) mainly because that keeps it even--almost everyone else double adds-on too! Especially if it's a 1-2K 1st place!

If you are only BRd for 20 MTTs, you shouldnt be playing more than a $5 rebuy IMO.

With an approx $1K br, I am probably properly br'd for $20 tourneys, and on occasion I do the $24's, but that doesn't mean I feel comfortable about that.

I was trying to impart some hard earned wisdom about R&A's being a bit devious. They suck you in with promises of glory, fame and riches beyond belief! All for just one more stake.......

I finished 41 out of 561 in the rebuy I played in last night and didn;t rebuy or add on at all.

My oringinal thought for this thread was do you always rebuy if you go bust and what is the criteria for the add on. At the first break I was sitting at a healthy 16K chips and average stack was 8K. I didn;t feel I should spend the money for the extra 2K chips.

That is the kind of advice/information i was looking for in this thread

Thanks all.

Yeah i'm all about the rebuy at break, but not after you get knocked completely out.
