Howdy,

Being a Baduk (Go, Weiqi) player, it is common to get help from those a little stronger than you, and give help to those a little weaker. The idea is to have a bunch of players in a sort of ladder, all directly helping (coaching) the person right below them.

For example:

Mary who is losing at 2nl will get coached by
John who is beating 2nl for 3bb/100 who is getting coached by
Sandy who is beating 2nl for 7bb/100 but only beating 5nl for 2bb/100 who is getting coached by
Joe who is beating 5nl for 5bb/100
etc...
etc...
etc...

Anyone interested in setting up something like this?

I'd say have to have at least a 50,000 hand sample at a stake level to prove where you stand, unless you are applying as a losing player at the lowest stakes.

It's all a purely volunteer thing, and the winningest player to sign up would not have a coach until someone winninger signs up, but as we know, often we learn just as much from teaching; having to put our thought process into words and explanations helps us think through them better ourselves.

If interested, you would have to commit to answering questions by email and/or Skype from your assigned protege and a one hour a week lesson/sweat session or so.

The ladder will be periodically reshuffled. People who don't carry their weight will be removed from the chain immediately.

These are just my ideas on it. Anyone interested?

I think tourney players and cash players would have to be on separate lists. The strategies are too different and someone who is good at one may not be that good at the other. For example, I would have very little help for an aspiring tourney player as I play cash games 99% of the time. Conversely, I would likely not benefit as much from being coached by someone who only plays tournaments.

Thanks for the web hosting offer. I actually have two hosting accounts myself and I can host on one of those. I might scrape together a basic web page in the next couple days to put up about it and for signup.

PS: If I seem to disappear for a day at any point in the discussion, it's because of the posting limits on this board. I have already run into it a couple times.

I think this kind of already happens with out actually needing a group as such. Those losing at certain stakes naturally seek advice from those that are beating the stakes they are playing. Good idea though.

This would be a bit more formal of an arrangement such that someone can impart their collected skills to another person. It's a more focused approach to improving one's whole game more quickly.

Sounds very cool. 100% agree on this > often we learn just as much from teaching; having to put our thought process into words and explanations helps us think through them better ourselves.

Hope you have success with running this. Cool idea.

Well, it looks like what I thought was kind of a failed proposition is starting to get some replies. How about this? PM me with the following info to sign up.

1. Name
2. Skype ID
3. Win rates (for each level for each game you play):
--a. Game (I imagine this will just be NLHE for a lot of people but would love to have players of other games involved as well)
--b. Stakes
--c. bb/100 or BB/100 (depending on the game)
--d. sample size

When I get what looks like a viable ladder, I'll assign mentors. I'll also set up a Skype group as well for everyone involved if you guys think it would be useful.

Thanks for the interest!
