Hi,

I'm looking for ideas for line construction involving medium pocket pairs. I'm currently playing $10NL and I am considering medium PPs to be JJ-88. I am looking at two situations in particular. The setup for the situations are the same. I get dealt medium PP in middle position. I raise 4BB and get called by at least two players in position on me. In both cases, stacks are 80-120 BB, or 20-30x bet size.

1. Flop brings 2 Broadway overcards

2. Flop brings a pair ranking over mine with a Broadway card

My current line in both of these situations is to check/fold to any future action, but I am sure there has to be a better way to get some value from these hands. Any suggestions about lines you take in these situations or methods you used to become more comfortable in this spot.

In the first, I would generally check fold.

In the second, I lean towards c-betting about half to 2/3 pot. In my opinion, most people play too straight forward here. The board may freeze top pair (2p hand) for fear of better 2 pair, effectively capping most players ranges if they call, and possibly getting to show down without further betting. I wouldn't barrel the turn too often, but if I caught a lucky turn (or river) I would almost always look to get paid.

The first situation depends on the callers. If they're fishy I'll tend to check fold. If they're more solid what are solid players cold calling with? Possibly low pairs they might fold or even weak Broadways that might fold. Check folding the turn though.
Situation two I think check folding here is too weak with only one overcard. Check calling isn't a good line so I tend to lead here as well. 1/2 pot against straight forward players and 2/3 against trickier players because they are less likely to see my bet as weak

This def no good.
Calling pre usualy is weak hand and depend on the oponent if is reg they 3bet/fold pre. If you get call then prob not good player or its a bad reg and check fold its not good better bet/fold and then giveup you can always hit on next street or win at showdown if they checkdown/.

Implied odds and set mining with other outs

If your holding 88 and raise 4x get 3 callers as you described and the flop comes 9-k-10 then you should fold however if it's qq-6 then set or boat mining for that one in 24 or so Chance is worth it to check and call assuming a qk-aq qj is probable. When you have jj and the boards comes a-7-k as it often does then getting value is very much impossible. If the turn comes a J the a q-10 has you crushed and with 3 other players in there the odds of good cards like the ace or king paring are abysmal with only the 7 to help you which probably has been burned or mucked.. The only Value jj has on over card boards is something like aa-5 or 9-10-A because you might be good,or you can gamble it up to improve to a set which is good,or A solid Queen making you open ended even then your still gambling and that queen not might be good with qk, but at least you now you gambling for the nuts or a chop possibly but you have the jacks so it's less likely a queen will make Broadway to a kj.
