Ive loved to play poker for many years, not continually but sporadically throughout the years. I haven´t been serious about learning, I have mainly just played casually and mostly tournaments.

The time has come that I want to learn to play full ring cash games, and I want to take this seriously and apply myself. Because I want to be a competent player and move up in stakes.

I will be starting with 2nl full ring cash games. And this thread will serve as my journal and as a learning tool. You are welcome to follow along and give your comments and criticism.

Ive been reading two books recently (not finished with either one, but about 3/4th done with both)
Crushing the micro stakes by blackrain79
and professional no limit holdem vol. 1

My current BR is small, currently 26$

I only have around 5000 hands since I started playing again.. And I´ve just recently started to apply myself to the things I´m learning through the books (the last 2500 hands). I understand my sample size is really small, and that I need minimum 20,000 to get an indication of how things are going.

But here are a few stats to start with.

H1:

Pre is good
Flops is good but you could also check
Turn is close but I would lean towards calling, don't know wtf his doing.

H2:
pre: why did you min-raise?
Flop: nice Cbet, Too small raise, should make it somewhere around 0.4 or even more, other then that nothing special.

H3:
pre, well played.
Flop: why did your raise and why did you raise so small?
Turn: He is leading into you again even though the J should be a scare card for most of his calling range, I would not raise and if you choose to raise I would make it bigger.
River: I can't see what the pot is but the bet is too small, you should just be going all-in your self here. I really don't know what he is representing but you seem to be in your higher percentage of your range here.

Some other things, why are you not buying in for the maximum amount or having auto top-up enabled? Your VPIP/PFR has a bigger gap then usual, I would like to see some hands where you decided to limp / call an open with some middle hands and lost!

wishing you luck!

H2

I min raise with a low PP, to try keep my cost of seeing the flop on the lower in the attempt of increasing set mining profitability, should I raise more than min, with a low PP?

H3

on the flop I min-raised to try to get a fold, but I realize now that the fold equity was pretty much non-existent...

I need to study bet sizing a bit more. I think I raise to little in spots I should be raising more.
I do buy maximum, but am not always too quick to top up again.

Thanks for the feedback :)

H2:
Min opening with small PP's might seem like a good play in a vacuum but if you only open small PP's and maybe small SC's even the regs at 2NL will start to pick up on that and 3Bet you much lighter. You could min-raise with some of your best hands to balance it out but at this stakes you want to be playing kind of tight so you have way more value hands when you raise, hence you want to open to atleast 3x, I would not mind 4x or 5x with all your hands either

H3:
If I read the hand correctly you were on the CO? I would not bluff raise with this hand, you are blocking out the As so you are blocking out alot of his Axss hand that he might bluff you with here, also what hands do you not bluff raise in this situation? Do you bluff raise any A + Over card? I think your raising range will be too wide in that case. You have a lot of draw hand on this board so you could just stick to bluff raising most of them and maybe call or fold with this hand. On the other hand I really have no idea what someone would be donk-betting here, if you think you can play exploitive against this opponent and he is almost allways bluffing when his Donk-betting then Raising is great!

pokerstars has the option to auto top-up so that you will allways have 100bb at your table! :)

If I were you I would try to stick to a hand opening chart or atleast build your own so that you know where you are in your range post flop! :)

Hey dude, nice to see someone else from brazil playing cash games (it seems like these guys are all into tournaments only).

Reading Blackrain's book is a great start. It will get you in the right track to be a winning cash player at the micros.
You are using a HUD, right? If so, it's better to use the hand history formatter from the tracking program. It's easier to read because it has the total size of the pot and also the names of the positions right beside the players. Also, it's better not to include the results of the hands, they don't matter and you will get biased analysis by other players.

GL at the tables!

Thanks for the advice Vini, Im actually not from Brazil, But I live here in Jundiai (my wife is Brazilian :) )How do I use the hand history formatter in HM2? Ive just usually right clicked on the hand and pressed copy with stats.

I will not post the hand results in the future, duly noted :)

Oh, that's cool! :) Jundiai is not very far from my city.

I use PT4, so I don't know how it works in HM2, but look for something like 'Copy the hand to forum format' in the options of a particular hand. You can always go to the support page of HM2 or even just google it. Hope it helps.

I spewed some chips last night, I was playing too aggressive ended the night a buy in or two down...

Did a good session today, recovered from last night and then some :)

BR is now 31$ (started from 14$ or so, after I stopped playing MTT´s, and decided to focus on my cash game)

I haven´t decided my gameplan yet, but I am thinking I will move up to 5NL when I have 100$.. and then to 10NL when I have 200$ what do you guys recommend?

I am kind of confused. I think I like your play but pre flop it says that you raised to $0.05 but that the limper called $0.04, I guss that you raised to $0.06 and that its something wrong in the hand history? I like to raise to 3bb + 1bb for each limper so here I would raise it to 4bb. It seems like a fish just beacuse he limped but he has a vpip of 0 after 30 hands so I dont know what the limp means but I would assume you would only raise here with value.

Betting flop and turn is good. Npw on the river it says that you bet out $0.4 and got called $0.27? Is he all-in? There is something wrong with his stack size or the river here. Anyways, if you pur him all in om the river I like everything, if not, then I would bet bigger on the turn. But all in all, well played!

Now what would be more interesting is if he would raise you on the river what would you do?

As for bankeroll management I like the stratergy you presented if you can handle some big swings and you should have a stop loss (I think 5BI) and when you hit that move down again!

I guess I was pretty tired when I posted last night I made a couple of mistakes with the hand history..

mistake 1, The player I highlighted in the playerpool is wrong, it was player 9 I was playing against, and not player 1.

mistake 2, I put my position as UTG, but in fact I was small blind, which would explain the difference when the opponent limp calls. ( I saw this mistake last night after I posted, but it was too late and I couldnt edit)

So yes, when I bet 0.4 I put him all in :)

If he raises me on the river, I would most likely fold. call, call, raise seems to be better than my overpair on this flop from a slightly loose passive player here. I would give him credit for a boat.

5BI seems like a reasonable stop loss, but I think I will be more conservative and have my stop loss 4BI before I move down again

Tonights session went ok, had its ups and downs, but ended up in the positive.

BR is at $33 now.

I know I still have a very small sample size, but how are my stats coming along now? Maybe overly aggressive? (see attachment below)

edit: How relevant is BlackRain79´s micro stakes book for todays 2nl? for example overbetting fish with your nut hands to represent a bluff (fish psychology as he calls it) in my limited experience I seem to be getting mostly folds.. I feel like I´m blasting them out of the water and losing value doing this. What are your opinions?

Yesterday I had a couple of short sessions, was running pretty badly so I took a break in between.

A fish with 70vpip, 4 betting me all in 4 times within 15 hands, I fold until I wake up with QQ, I 3bet, expecting him to 4bet shove, and he does. He has KK and takes down the pot.

Then I got it all in against a loose player with a set on the turn, but he rivered his 2 outer and made a higher set.

Then I flop a full house, again got it in on turn, and another players pulls a 2 outer on me for a bigger boat.

So I was around 3BI´s down yesterday, I just stopped playing to prevent me from tilting.

Thankfully Today was a really good session, I made back what I lost yesterday, and then some.

BR is up to 37$

Haven´t played many hands in the last couple of days. Been busy with my wife and work. Got in a few hands yesterday, My BR is up to $38.5

I was thinking I would take a 1 BI shot at nl5 when I reach $55. But lets see when I get there, would like to hear some of your opinions as well.

On another note, Could someone point me in the right direction in how to use my HM2 to find leaks in my game? I can´t afford leakbuster as it is right now so would appreciate some advice.

Looking very good!

Good idea to find leaks is to go through daily your big pots and see if you are happy. To be hones I have never found any leaks through stats, the problem is that when you know what you try to find you already know the correct answer. Posting hands has shown me quite many leaks and still do almost every time =)

youtube is full of leak finding tutorials for HEM (not for pokertracker :( )

You lose 3 buyins yesterday because you are not applying proper skill. Your boat getting beaten by a bigger boat can be avoided if you play more skillfully. Increase your skill, increase your earnings :))

@braveslice

Makes sense, I will be more active in posting my hands here from now on, will also check out youtube for some vids. Thanks :)

@nitulbhatia

It is obvious that I´m not properly skilled yet. Thats not the point, the point is that I am working on improving my game ;)

I think that before you draw conclusions on statistics and look for leaks in HM. While the distance is small. I like your game. There are mistakes, but you'll find, if you only play NL2. At NL5 before, fill at least 150$, follow bankroll management. Good luck.)

I feel like I´m over committing with top pair top kicker on fairly dry boards.. I´m getting it in, but am usually beat. against overpairs, trips, and shitty two pairs.

I need to learn to find my leaks.

edit; after further reflection, seeing as TPTK is a weak hand in the grand scheme of things, I should normally keep the pot small unless I have a specific read on the player. What are your thoughts?
