its me and the gf's anniversary and i got her a game of skyrim that she wanted, i suggested she could give me £30 in pokerstars so i can play and learn the cash game a bit better

happy to say, i started with £30 and in 2 days playing a few hours, ive managed to make a £5 profit

i must admit the cash game seems to be a lot different then i remember, but im working on color coding my players

light blue for : fishy calls
dark blue for : fishy passive
red for : REG
Purple for : willing to bluff (add notes on the bluffs i had seen)
and yellow for : anybody ive played hands with that hasnt given me any real info on there plays just yet

just wanted some input from you guys on my approach, its changed my game drastically as the colors are helping me pin point how i play hands against certain individuals without forgetting the red guys (always gotta look out for the regs at ur table) lol

yeah i have noticed alot of players on th 1c 2c tables are light or dark blue
against dark blue i will reraise pre alot because the play passive if they miss, easy to know if they are beat and i can steal it away from them regardless of holdings.

against light blue, im more inclined to be agressive with hands like TPTK i know ill be beat sometimes when they hit sets n stuff, but the times they call me with a simple top pair is funny

a red player, im more inclined to play against them postflop as i know they have shown they can let go of there hands, so with them i am willing to throw the odd calculated bluff dependant on what i think they are holding

and purple (agro bluffer) im letting him hang himself most of the time lol

still dont know if its the best course of action as cash is still my weakest game but atm im going for trial and error against the diff types

The colors are good when you don't have any poker tracking software or aren't allowed to use the software. Right now I color code the players I play against because my bankroll isn't big enough in my opinion to purchase the poker tracking software. So along with the colors ACR also allows you to make player notes that stay with that player which I have found to be very useful in table selection, selecting a seat at the table, as well as another player's overall play.

how would you go about table selecting? i ask because right now im just doing a quick table., and then evaluating my opponents as im playing, but thats cus of course im only new back and its not always easy to spot fishy plays on the stats screen, but there could be something im missing regarding table selection

obv if there is a table that clearly has high pots your usually on a fishy table, but just sitting at one of these tables isnt always good, cus you have to have a few good players, too many fish = too many calls, and that means so many more draws, which can be good, but maybe not when the bankroll is still in its infancy stage, again not sure just now.

Generally at microstakes you do not need to play exceptional poker. All you really need to beat the game is a strong mental game and making decisions based on the maths. Most of your money will come from the weaker players making poor decisions.

Best of luck.

its funny, after such a huge break from the game im seeing the cash game as completely different, maybe its just the stakes im playing at but players are so passive, and if they arent being passive they usually have something

i used to play my A A type hands so hard that whenever it made it to showdown i was beaten, but im making more money now from "protecting my blind from button raisers" "re raising pre against passive type players, and just a few big pots when im fairly certain the opponent is going to call me down with weak holdings

i have won my last 4 all ins on the flop/turn when opponent only has 3 outs :)

It´s very important to make notes / and classify your opponents. And like you said , you can use the colours to easily identify the players you are facing. I use more colours, if you a parameter :
koGSWcs.png

In order (from the top to the bottom) :
Looser -> Bad player -> maniac -> clueless game -> limper -> Calling Station -> tight -> REG Looser -> REG weak -> Good REG -> Expert Reg -> Aggro -> Twitch players -> Locked.

Good luck in your journey!

It helps to have notes and using colors is fine too. I would caution against this being used as "bible" though. Players change and what should matter most is what your opponent is doing at the moment not what your notes say they did in the past. It is one tool but do not over use it. As long as you are winning great. Keep it up.

The color system may even help, but it needs a lot of attention as it can also get in the way. We should keep in mind, that, everyone gets two cards, and they can be any two cards. good luck

oh i definately wouldnt overuse my notes, my notes are primarily for the game i am on right there and then, it would be very very uncommon atm for me to match up against the same person, so i watch them for a few rounds, see who is calling raises and folding directly the turn, see how opponents are playing when they reach showdown, and then color code them for that specific session

I dont have stats cus i dont have the software that records those kind of stats, but that doesnt mean im not paying attention, a player first gets the blue status by seeing too many hands, by the time im playing my first bb i can usually see who is actively limping / calling and they are the first to get any sort of color code, then its a case of seeing how they act when they miss or hit

a passive player if he is betting into you, you can fold since hes normally passive when he doesnt have anything, if he's calling me down he has some sort of showdown value, ill bet 3 streets, but never try and get it all in the middle, the players arent stupid they are only calling me down if they have me beat if i overplay my hand, and better players can exploit it

and i just remembered why i hate the cash tables so much lol, no matter how safe you play, no matter how good the odds are, at the start of your challenge 1 downswing can cost you big

i had £7 profit at the tables over the last 3 days, i was very pleased with my £7 profit.
Then i lost 80% of that profit in 4 hands

a low stacker 60c shoves all in so i call with A 8 (he held A 6 and flops the 6)

then i rebuy back to max, i get 34s on the button and see the flop 3 4 8, i know im ahead, there is a raise im happy with, the call from a short stacker and i re raise. the original raiser shoves over the top of me, i call and he reveals A 10o turn comes the 10, and rivers an 8

Then twice i lost 50c to J J v Q Q on low boards (im so lucky i wasnt overplaying my jacks lol)

and finally lost another $2 with 7 8s flopped an open ender so i try and semi bluff the pot, turn brings the straight, happy days get like $1.20 in leaving me 80c behind, and river brings the flush which he had ><

so im taking a wee break for the rest of the night, need to calm myself down
still up £2 which isnt bad but if the downswing continues ill be annoyed lol, prety much 3 days went down the drain in the last 1-2 hours :(

you have again just been introduced to the worst part of poker. Making good decisions against bad suckout players. Welcome to the club. But I think your overall strategy is sound. Just keep trying to make good decisions and I think you will do well. I had AA on cash table and raised pre-flop and got 1 caller. Flop was Kh 8h 4s. I bet big and got called. Turn was 7c, I bet big again and got called. River was 2h, moron bet small and I decided just to call. Idiot showed 3h 5h. So this kind of garbage happens all the time.

I appreciate that comment thanks :)
yesterday i was having a rough day before poker so was avoiding playing it, then later on evening i was feeling better and after 2 hours it made my bad day come back lol, then after those 2 tourneys ending in first 10 mins both of em, the AK hand i didnt have many outs till the river and reason i shoved was i was looking and hoping to thin it a little, but more importantly if i did manage to win that hand i would of had 10k in chips a HUGE chip advantage on a turbo 6 min blind structure.

Most importantly i know what my mistakes were in the cash games, even if my thought process was correct, but in the tourneys i would not of changed a single part of how i played the hands that knocked me out, it was just my unlucky day i guess xD after that second tourney knock out it was straight to sleep lol

indeed xD punches happen all time so today ive gone on to the MTT sng
opened up 3 of em, first 2 got knocked out (1 bad call from me but was protecting my blind vs SB) other was just A 10 v 99 and i didnt hit

but tourney 3 im sitting 1st with double the stack of 2nd :) with only 5 people to go
LOL and then suddenly everybody gets uber agressive im forced to race my AQs vs 99 and dont hit haha
oh well :) made some profit even if its not much and if i had won that (i had 2 over cards + flush draw on the flop even though was all in pre)
so i missed my 60% :( but by the end everybody and i mean everybody was re raising all in at any raise, so i had to pick my hand carefully and it didnt work out this time
