I have been playing poker for over a month now and am currently crushing the play money games. I have also read a couple of books in poker and so far it seems like I am playing much better than the other people I play against. I know all the tricks like slowplaying a big hand and limp reraising with aces from early position. Because of the positive results I am getting, I feel like switching to real money games is definitely going to be profitable for me long term. I'm thinking of depositing a couple of thousand dollars on stars and seeing where it leads. The question is, should I start out playing cash games at 100nl? Or should play it safe by starting with the 50nl games which are likely a bit softer? Any advice would be appreciated :)

not sure if trolling.......
im a 25NL reg. deposit a couple thou and ill play you HU for rolls if you think youre that much of a beast.

incase your post is genuine, deposit like $200 max and play 10NL. i guarantee if youve been playing for only a month and only with play money youre going to get slammed so hard you wont know what hit you. itll be a far cheaper lesson

Start at 2NL. If you beat that over 20-30k hands than go to 5NL. At 50NL and 100NL you will loose your money quick.

ok thanks for the advice everyone. it seems like 50nl/100nl on stars may be tougher than I'd anticipated. might take it really slow and start off at the 10nl games where there's bound to be heaps of fish i can make money from. i reckon at such low stakes the standard of play is going to be similar to play money, or just marginally better so it won't be much different to what I'm used to.

If you have only ever played play money, then you will be surprised. Seriously though, just deposit a small amount of money and play 2nl/5nl even 10nl...if you feel you crush then it won't take you long before you will be moving up to 50nl anyway.

its not even close to the same as play money. its quite literally a different game entirely. 200NL in a casino is easier to beat IMO than 2NL online.

I have also played a couple of sessions of 100nl live poker and beat it for 80 bucks over a modest sample of around 300 hands. So clearly I can crush the live games but I guess the online ones are that much tougher? Surely if i'm a clear winner at 100nl live then i can beat 10nl on stars no problem right?

You can't say 300 hands and winning $80 is a clear sign of being a "clear winner" in a 100nl live game. Not sure you understand the variance in the game.

No, beating 100nl live doesn't mean you will beat 10nl online stars no problems. I'd actually be inclined to believe 100nl live is easier than 10nl online.

wow really? i find that hard to believe...

Might be a stretch given how terrible 2nl players are, but I'd say a winning 10nl online player could beat 200nl live or at least not have any big problems.

That said though, JC is correct I've seen just as bad players in live cash games as you would in 2nl online..

ok i guess i underestimated just how much tougher online games are compared to live. i might just play some hands of 2nl to get started and i'll post some hands later, maybe in another thread. im glad you guys are out there to stop me from spewing all my money away at 100nl!

having said that, if you can afford it, id learn on 10NL instead of 2NL, simply because youll pick up a lot less bad habits. either that or just post a shitload of hands and actually study and develop your play based on the advice you get from reasonable players

100 Nl live is full of recreational players like 2NL is. The reason is simple. These are the lower limits they can buy in. Do not think that a first timer at a table poker live is better than a first timer at 2NL unless that guy has some experience at online poker.

Playing money games is different from real money games.

If you want to migrate, then start from the lowest stake.

Have to play many many hands and see the result.

Haha it was a semi-troll actually, but yeah I was surprised! I'm actually a microstakes reg looking to move up in the not so distant future. But i did want to find out exactly how tough the higher limit games are on stars and how much tougher online is compared to live, since I only play online (besides a few home games with mates). This post can also serve as an informative source for new players wondering which stakes to start at, since I've heard of some who give 100nl a try straight away and go bust quickly.

However since this site does not seem to encourage trolls or even semi-trolls, I will refrain myself from making such threads in the future to ensure I don't get banned. I just thought I might write something fun as my first thread, that's all! :D

I agree with your strategy firstly we have to start with less NL then slowly increase the NL.
