Hey Chatters,

Can someone explain to me why we make totally stupid plays? Is it something in a part of the brain that reacts on its own?
Not being a very educated person, it is interesting to understand.
Not to get into specifics, but the other day, I made a dumb, stupid play. And when I went broke and out of the game, I tried to understand how I could have played like that when I knew it was against every poker rule and strategy in the book. Up until that point, I was above average on chips and looking like I would make a good finish.
I have some theories, but not sure.
Is it impulse because in on line poker there is no time to think, or is it some part of the brain that acts independently of our conscious mind, of is it just plain stupidity?

i think its to a large extent a combination of arrogance, greed, curiosity, fatigue and the time constraints of online poker. sometimes we can listen to smart us and sometimes the other us wins that battle.

Don't forget to add tilt, and frustration to the list.

As mentioned above ^^

Way in which to work at trying to counteract this..... try taking some time on every play you make,... even the ones that seem to be really obvious 'no brainers'.

A lot of times we end up playing the game the way we want to play it rather than the way we should. We get super LAGgy and aggressive because we start trying to win pots instead of money. That's what tends to happen to me when I tilt- I forget about position and stack size and just try to run the table. It's the worst kind of tilt, too.

Yeah, it's all about emotions. Poker is a game of risk, and it rewards players who play smart and it ravages those who play on their whims. It's extremely important to build a strong solid discipline. Remember, you're playing to win, and that takes focus and you can't afford to have any distractions along the way.

Some times I just get sick of the button stealing my blinds.
Thats generally when I make most of my stupid mistakes.
And I am working on that, incase your at my table during one of our freerolls.:p
Also small to medium pocket pairs get me in trouble sometimes, but with the help of some good books I am getting alot better on these weeknessess.
Then theres timeS"USUALLY WHEN i HAD A FEW TO MANY BEERS",that I want to play everyhand.
That is also being worked on.

Sometimes the biggest, toughest opponent is yourself. Not only in making irrational plays, but also not following BRM, bad table/game selection, playing at the wrong time of the day, playing too tired, the list goes on.
