Just wondering what your thoughts are on the best way to play small pocket pairs in 6 Max, out of position pre-flop. (22-66)

77+ ill call raises with, or raise myself out of position but the lower pairs never seem to work out. Obviously when you hit your set it's very well hidden and you usually get a lot of value, but the lower pairs are harder to chase the sets with as there are more overcards that come on the flop and its just not worth calling the bets made in the hope to make trips.

I never limp into pots, but could that be an option in this case with the low pockets? I suppose we want to see a flop for as little cost as possible. Or do I just raise and if I hit get good value, or just fold them pre and save the $?

I would open raise all of them, and fold to 3B.

Cbet against a nit with a high fold to Cbet, and bet big if you hit your set against a fish. If you're calling raises OOP, make sure you have good implied odds, generally at least 15-1. Odds of hitting a set are close to 8-1, and you're not going to get stacks in every time you hit, so you need to be conservative when playing anything worse than 88 imo.

That said, there's nothing wrong with just throwing it away if you're on a nitty table; you can get into bad spots if you're not careful vs 3Bets, or not all that confident postflop.

Limp - set mine. Raise on tight table.

It's table- and situation- dependent. For instance, if a table is passive so that limpers have a decent chance to see the flop, you can mix some limps into your game more easily than at another table where limpers almost always get iso'd.

The stack to blind ratio can also come into play if there are players with short or mid-stacks, including yourself, since this affects the implied odds.

Also, folding small pairs in EP isn't a huge leak since the best you can expect in the long run is a marginal profit.

I almost always play them with a raise unless I am at a table with a TAG that has already opened with a raise. I will call them and see if hit the set. Other players I may play a bit more aggressive.

@AkaRobbo: I recommend you read my thread about how to play small PP (1-8). I go over important concepts such as when to call profitably in position and out of position, when to set mine given certain effective stack sizes, etc.

I read an article once, back in the days, saying that with low to mid pairs you should limp ( or call raises according to your whole stack in percentages. Say you got a pair of 2s you should limp or call a raise that has a maximum value of 2% of your whole stack, money in that case, going up 3% for 3s 6% for 6's and so on ).
It doesnt matter to me whether its cash or a tournament, I usually limp in with 2 to J, and Queens and above I raise myself, or reraise.
In cash you should look for different signs - how many players entered the pot before you and how many are there to act after you do. For those after you need to ask yourself - Do they play aggressive? Whats the chance of being awarded if I hit my set ( If there are aggressive players post flop ) Will they raise after I call that 0.10c bet and lose my money? In a heads up game your mid pair can turn into a good weapon to use against your opponent. Its different I guess, even if there are 8 players entering the pot, and the raise is 2BB, lets say, or 3, I would still make that call even with 2s, because I know that if I flop a set it will be worth the risk.
