The live 1/2 table was fairly loose. I'm in late position with A2 of spades and $11 was bet in early position from a passive player. Many people call so I decided I had pot odds. Flop come J 10 of spades and 9 of diamonds. 4 players go all-in (and have me covered) so I decided to put in my much needed $180 due to pot odds as well. As I recall, 2 people had sets, 1 person had an unknown hand, and someone else had Q8 of spades. Please, did I make the right play or should have I folded? Thanks!

Firstly you were wrong to sit down with $180 if it was much needed.other than that there was nothing wrong with your call given the money in the pot and the equity your hand has.

A2 is a bad hand to risk $180 with, unless the flop is {5 3 4}. When you call an Early position open with A2 Suited you should consider yourself to be on a draw. Your Weak Ace is likely to be dominated so you are looking to draw to a flush or straight with that hand. You had 9 outs to hit your flush (35% by the Turn, 17% by the River). You will only make your flush 1/3rd of the time, and miss it 2/3rds of the time. Can you post up the hand history?

Situation easily resolved

Hi,

if you are willing to blow your entire roll on a nuts flush hoping to hit at best probably 10 outs ( im sure less) with other players in the pot - i would say this is quite a crazy move..fold all the way for me, if you did make this play then what was the result?:)

Your call preflop is the mistake. In a loose game, with the short stack, you should play a pretty tight opening range. A2 is just not strong enough. Deeper, you can 3 bet here, but you are short, so just fold and avoid these situations.

I think you should read Cash Games 1&2 by Harrington. They will explain how to approach this game expertly.

Well after you call preflop, it is really just a math problem. If we say there were 6 callers for the $11 pre and with the 4 callers plus you the pot will be 6*11 (66) + 5*180 (900) = 966. So 180 / 966 = .186 so you only need to win about 19% of the time to be profitable. With 4 allins in front of you all your out aren't going to be live but you probably have at least the 5 outs you would need.

You choose to sit at a poker table with money you need elsewhere you need to talk about your really bad judgement or your gambling problem, not odds, stop playing & get some help.
