So I've ground up a $300 deposit to about 1k playing mostly 25nlz on bovada. When do you guys normally start taking shots at the next limit?

In the past I'd grind 24BI for the next limit and then play until I lost 4BI but I never really had much success at this and then after trying a few times I'd get frustrated and quit. I'm wondering if I should try a smaller number so regrinding for the next limit won't be as frustrating and time consuming... or if I should use a bigger number so my chances of staying at that limit are higher.

I recommend not taking shots at higher limits until you're ridiculously overolled at the next level. Let's say you're a .50/$1 online player at a site with a $100 max buy in. You're thinking of moving up to 1/2 with a $400 max. I would wait until I had at least 16k before moving up. You really want about 40 buy ins to account for variance. Variance alone is extremely unlikely to take you down 40 buy ins, but what you don't want is to move up with say 4k, lose 5 or 6 buy ins due to bad luck and then tilt off the rest of your account or end up with too little to play the limit you were comfortable with.

Remember how you do in a few thousand hands is mostly due to good or bad luck, so in my opinion shot taking is purely for gamblers. The old timers like Brunson went broke numerous times because they had to accept the limits the rich fish wanted, but with so many limits available today, I think such experiences aren't necessary.

at the limit of where you are playing is quite possible to win. more difficult to play on higher limits with bets of 50 cents and a dollar . so that there is play in the future.

That's a pretty aggressive BRM you're using there (or at least the starting with just 12 BIs was).

If you want my opinion, I'd suggest taking the shots at the most opportune moments. Either follow a known fish to the higher stakes while he's chasing his losses, or - more importantly - do the shot-taking during the weekend where there's bound to be more fish around.

I had to play some 10nl when I dropped below $300 but was only there for like 2k hands.

I like the advice. I think I'm going to go with 1-2 buy in shots this time around. I think it was around this time last year after blowing a 2nd shot at a higher limit I realized it would take another month to regrind another shot so just gave up. So this time I'm going to just play 50nl so long as i have 20bi. I imagine i'll be alternating stakes like every other day and my BR will stay static for a few weeks before the rungood hits.

Maybe I'll make a thread.

I must've given you a lot of that roll lol. I was dabbling in 25NL zone for a few months and just did horrible, just not my game style.

But seriously, for that format I'd definitely wait until you have at least $1500 before shot taking 50 NL Zone and maybe go back to 25 if you drop more than 5 or 6 BIs.

i still believe that 50 times the max buyin should be the best bankroll management tool going up levels too early is the way to losses. rgs tom

As long as you drop back down immediately when things go bad, it's not that bad being more aggressive. Especially if you have a decent edge.
