I remember a thread where someone talked about how to react to absurdly small donk bets. I can relate to the innate desire to want to jam over them even without a hand. So I did some experimenting to see how light people would reraise them. Note that hand 1 is played terribly from start to finish, probably a fold on all streets. But after the flop I was pretty sure he had a pair under the board...I think I would have called the river with KQ myself...

the second is purely for amusement

That first hand cracks me up. And I also want to put my chips on the table with a sledgehammer when someone does this stupid little move. I hate donk bettors!

If it's someone who has been playing relatively straight I will give them some respect. But the ones who do it every time they are in a pot (and that's usually around 80% of pots) just annoy the bejesus out of me.

I like the post though. Kinda funny to see how those worked out.

Yeah you're never getting stacks in with the nut straight vs a set without donk betting there.

ummm, those aren't donk bets, you're the preflop raiser and it's checked to you on both streets...

Lol you're right. I didn't even notice.

I'm pretty convinced that people just like to post random hands where they win a stack regardless of applicability to the actual thread.

Whoops. I though donk betting was related to ludicrously small bets in relation to the pot.

Which of the following is required for it to be a donk bet?
1. Small raise
2. OOP
3. PFR by someone else
4. Call / check pre-flop

Does a minraise first to act on the flop count as a donk bet when you have checked the BB?

A donk bet is where you act before the pre flop aggressor post flop. So if middle position raises it up pre flop, and you are in the big blind, you just flat call. Then, on the flop, you stick a bet out there prior to any other action. That is donk betting. The term "donk" is not the same as you're thinking here.

This.
Donk betting = leading out with out beeing the aggresor on the previuse street(u can donk bet turn and river, not just the flop)

"Stoopid pawker playheur he isnt now how to do blough yet!always bet 1$ like he has something.I show him how to does it!After Owl I gots floush"
ALL IN("nyegh nyegh nyegh") instant call and loss...
"Aw man what a stoopid playheur how can he call my floush all in?and why is he wonning?f%&%&% %^%^...Time to depasit my maney again...I'm shoure I am won this time!"
Sorry for the extreme caricature just couldn't let this one pass!I'm so glad these people lose so much money that stupidly because they win half as much because of their stupid calls and river luck!

Whoops. I though donk betting was related to ludicrously small bets in relation to the pot.

One other clarification, the term "donk bet" doesn't mean that the player doing this is necessarily a donkey. There are appropriate times to donk bet. There are also inappropriate times to donk bet (the majority of the time, a donk bet is a mistake), I'm sure that's where the term came from.

The ludicrously small bets in relation to the pot are just incredibly annoying - I totally sympathize w Villain in the first hand baudib posted, I probably would've played it the same, simply cuz you don't see good players doing it that often/ever (which is why baudib's post here is so cool, he's a good player demonstrating that it can be used effectively). :D

I tried to get that out in my post, but couldn't think of the wording. Thanks.:D

Oh no, you were fine sly. I think that's where he was actually mistaken was on the term "donk". I didn't cover that part very well.

But what do you do against those that donk bet when they have something, and donk bet trying to bluff? I have encountered them...seems the only reasonable solution is to just call every time you have something that's not the nuts or close to it...

Exactly, that's why it's called donk betting. If they want to raise the money in the pot and give you odds to call to a cheap showdown, then let them.

If you are the donk bettor, then I would advise sticking a real bet in on the turn if they just call. Any smart player is just gonna call you down cheap and take easy showdown.
