Keep it simple.

Tight or loose?
Passive/aggressive?
Straight forward/tricky?

The main reason to focus on the two players to your left is to figure out how often you will be able to steal blinds. But, the money is going to come from your right.

I focus on the player to my immediate right until I can answer all of the above questions. Then I start focusing on my left.

I don't really focus on anyone else... glaring mistakes by others will become apparent just by watching the flow of the game and paying attention to showdowns.

So, the guy to our right... What kind of mistakes is he making and how do we exploit them?

and

How often can we steal the blinds?

If the answers are not many and not often... it's time to find another game.

Double A that is good advice except if the person is in a SNG or MTT which the OP did not specify what type of game he is trying to read the villains in.

I prefer to coast a bit and watch the patterns develop. I will "test the waters" from time to time as well. If someone keeps raising ... I simply let them be taken out by others. I entice them with a saliable bet, then drop out of the fray; works quite well and I lose less chips that way. (Those players picking up on this strategy often call me "slinky," [smile].)

True. My advice is slanted towards: live games>cash games>limit poker.
