Does anyone have any advice or know of any videos, articles or books that deal with when you should raise the flop after cold calling preflop, e.g. when you are facing a cbet and should raise with top pair for protection (I'm particularly interested in this one), when draws, sets, etc should be raised. Also, what to do when facing a raise after cbetting?

If I call in position and face cbet on the flop when I have hit top pair I am not in a hurry to raise. I would normally call and see what happens on the flop. The bettor may keep coming at you on the turn or may slow down. If you raise there you may scare off worse hands or just be giving away money to a flop set etc. A set heads up you can slow play but once it is multi way just pile in the money. If you have a draw in position you can mix it up and throw in a raise or check raise out of position. These are the situations you should be planning for in your head even before they happen and when they do happen take your time. This is also the reason you should delay a few seconds when acting even if you plan to fold immediately. Protect your timing tells. As for cbet and you are raised..If you have nothing it is really an easy fold against most players. If you have a monster you can either call or raise the only real decision comes when you have a hand like a solid draw...here I think you would be better off check calling and your cbet is the problem. That means that you will need to check call a few other hands like top pair or over cards sometimes as well for balance.

From Dan Harrington's book on 6-max "The paired flop: We're playing in a $0.25/$0.50 6-max game. The first two players fold and the cutoff raises to $1.50.We have the 6h6c on the button and
call the $1.50. The blinds fold and the pot is $3.75.The flop is the 8c8h2s. The cutoff bets $2. What do we do? Paired flops share many of the characteristics of dry flops since very few hands connect with a paired flop, so if the cutoff didn't start with a pair, he probably doesn't have one now. In addition, he can't have a flush draw or a straight draw. Our modest pair of sixes is likely to be the best hand. If we probably have the best hand, our options are calling or raising. In this case, raising is the better choice. If our opponent has two high cards and is bluffing (the most likely scenario), a raise should win the hand. If we just call, many cards can arrive on the flop which we won't like to see. If we just call and an ace comes on the turn and our opponent bets, we won't know if the ace hit him or not, and we could be setting ourselves up to lose a big pot if we guess wrong. We raise" Thoughts? What if we were against UTG?

what sm1th said =)

basicaly dont fold top pair just beacuse you got a cbet, but to much aggro from your opp or checka-raises, or calls of big bets inducate big cards so dont over do with aggro

Remember, you are always trying to extract max value of your opponents.

When determining when to raise or to just call, you need understand when to keep the bluff hands in or to make the made hands pay. Raising can chase your opponents who would continue on the turn, and calling can get people to catch up. So just be mindful of the situation and what hands you're trying to get to do what.

Sm1th makes excellent points. I also have read Harrington, and he talks about board texture and opponent's tendencies as well. So much depends on how your opponents play, and what they are likely to do. Just remember to have a reason behind your bets. Are you trying to get value or to get a fold? How will you respond if your opponent 4-bets your 3-bet? The pros all say that you have to have a plan to be successful. and a number of them also say that consistently betting your big hands is the most profitable. You may get folds if you flop a set, but you might also get value from someone chasing a smaller set or chasing draws that they ultimately miss.

Raise the flop if you think a worse hand will call, or if it could get you to the river more cheaply.

If I have a pair, I will raise. When I say pair, I think high pair KK, AA, 1010, JJ... Small pairs only go call or fold if someone raise.

As far as videos i'm sure you watched everything out there if you youtubed it. But really raising all varies to whats on the flop and how many ppl are in the hand. you can be told to raise with so many ppl on the hand but its how that draw makes you feel at that time. If it is online and you called a pre flop raise and 2 or 3 other players did to the your top pair aint looking so good. But if only you and maybe 1 other player you could probably bet or raise over top confident. unless you got two the same suit on the board or a possible straight. like i said it all on how u feel at the time and what u been seeing from your opponents at the time.

Back in my day, 5 months ago, I was raising flops like maniac to get folds with air. That part of my game worked well, but in my current 'scared' condition I'm not a man to do it.

But well, I have no idea when to really X/Raise in NL5 zoom. In 2NL that was easy, every time there was A on the flop and you had a better hand than Ax.

Yes, I think top pair is raise-able and I concur with braveslice.

Don't be too greedy with one top pair. Another player can have two pair or better kicker, even pket pair. Bet less, with less risk.

When you are betting with the bigger boys they seem to bet alot more and you can't let them bet you off your cards just because the bet looks large. but be more confident in what you have

Yesterday, in a satellite with the first of 20 prize-winning places in my bankroll was 2000 opponents for 8000-20 000. The flop I raise and fold all do. This shows that your bankroll is not always decides everything.

Please remove the term "betting for protection" from your vocabulary. You are betting for value.

I normally would only call due to higher pocket pairs if it is possible on board and or pocket low pairs....they may have hit trips and it isn't pretty usually in the end if they have

If a high pocket pair, top pair on the board, or the board is small, but in the hands of a strong card - a raise
