Hi,I have a question about preflop raising. I play 2nl Zoom (full ring) almost exclusively at the moment, and have fallen into the habbit of simply 3xBB raising with most raise friendly hands. When in early position I'll play less, and mid-late I'll play more, as expected but I am curious about the raise amounts.

When in later position, is it advisable to occasionally increase the raise amount with the broad way pairs? I often stick in 3xBB but could 4-5xBB be beneficial too?

I'm aware the table often influences decision making, but in my head AA, KK etc are mostly ahead preflop, so being called larger could add value?

Thoughts?
Thanks,

Uhm I think honestly when you are opening raising you should just bet the standard amount all the time. Otherwise it could get exploited really easily. If you only raise premium hands bigger, like AA or KK that is really exploitable tendency. :)
Someone more skilled may tell you otherwise though, I am not 100% sure.

Well you could and should against complete fish. However against all other players raising nonstandard size alters their play strategy vs hero. How it does is depends. For me I'll call wider on premium draw hands, and will be quite carefully postflop. But the thing is that if you play 'good' you will be doing more bb against me because I trust the fact that players with larger sizes are giving me extra if I hit. Hmm so well I don't know.

As with a lot of what this game is I suppose it's situational. Doesn't always hurt, won't always help. I've found a lot of weekend players at 2nl will open shove with AX from anywhere, so I suppose when you're playing those guys it doesn't matter if it's 3xBB or 10xBB, their money's going in the pot one way or another.

Thanks for the input it's been helpful. :)

I would go with standard 3x or 4x bet. Like continuer said players will often raise too much or even go all in with garbage if they have position on you. This lets you either A) not lose as many BB or B) Catch someone with AA,KK, etc

One thing to remember here, you're talking about playing "zoom". I'm assuming that's one of those speed tables where you play different players each hand. If that's true then I would say feel free to vary your opening bets. No one will be around to learn your style and exploit it.

It depends on your position but if you're on the button and opening I think you should mix in some 4x and 5x with strong premium hands and then balance with suited connectors and one gappers in order to get action and build pots. This will help your blind steals get more respect in the future

because it is zoom (i.e. anonymous,) different rules apply, so ignore advice from people who didnt catch that. even with it being zoom, people are going to read 5BB PFR as strong and put you on AA, KK, AK. If people start to fold off more, you are losing money, if they act foolishly, you might win more.

list off questions and things to think about:
How deep are you? if everyone is light and they are putting 5+BB PF, they are pretty much committed, you will get more flop calls with draws or top pairs under your K or A. If you are quite deep, now you have to be sure you can get away if the board comes connected, etc. so hard to read people who you dont know when all you are holding is pair. do you really want to go all in with a a high pair? would depend on the player of course but you dont have that info.

two more things:
if people start to fold off more, keeping going 5BB PFR from position even with suited connectors not just AA or KK.

also, anything you do from the button will be viewed with suspicion, so go 5BB PFR there and expect more calls, they dont know you, but big raise from button suggests bullying, people will fight back.
