I know I played this wrong, let me have it! I'm in a live tournament early on. Blinds are 50/100. I am in the Big Blind with :ad4: :kd4: 2 callers to me and I raise 400 pre-flop. 1 fold Button calls. Flop is :kh4: :8d4: :ks4: I check and he bets 400, I call. turn is :kc4: I check the quads and he bets 400, I call. River is :qs4: and I look at my cards and check and he thinks and checks. I know I did something wrong on the river let me know some strategy here. Thanks!!

I would have raised on the turn and went all-in on the river. You could have won a lot of chips. :damnmate:

t1riel's advice is good. Did you get to see what he had, though? Chances are - and this has no real effect on how you should have played the hand, but it might make you sleep better - that he would have folded had you bet, anyway. Maybe there just wasn't more cash to be made here.

But a re-raise on the turn is probably a good idea. At that point, he might either put you on a bluff (and possibly push all-in), have absolutely nothing and fold (in which case you haven't really lost anything), or put you on having an A kicker (but no pair) and want to see the river.

My girlfriend plays some SnGs on pokerstars (play money) and was in the big blind with K3 yesterday. No raises, so she checked it and got to see a K-K-K flop. She had it easy, though. Seven people saw the flop, four people went all in on the flop and the turn, without her having to do any raising at all :p

Yes I saw his hand, It was :ah4: :9s4: , so he was just playing the 3 kings with the ace kicker. I'm sure he would of folded if I all inned, but you never know!

First off, posting stack sizes here would help tremendously...

Some times on the flop you might want to lead out and bet...most people do not bet when they hit trips. When you check-called the flop and the turn, your opponent had to know that you had a hand (at least a pair of 8's -> full house, which beats him).
There are two lines to take here...

1) Bet out 400-500 chips on the flop. If you are raised, just call. If he calls...
Check the turn looking to check-raised. If he bets, raise (all-in is an option).

2) Check-call the flop. On the turn, either bet out or go for a check-raise. Do NOT check this hand on the river... Bet out an amount you think he will call (value bet...1/4-1/2 the size of the pot).

Again, stack sizes would help...

Its so much better when the other guy has position is these situations but you didnt do a whole lot wrong beside the river bet.

Think the whole hand through and ask yourself "what could I have done differently to make the most amount of chips from this hand?"

The raise pre-flop was probably good, depending on how you was raising pre-flop through the course of the game. A raise on the turn would have been the move, the reason for this??? Well, the guy would have called, purely to see the river card, so you could have maximised your earnings. Then of course only a 400 bet on the river, purely to get a call.

BTW, vnh!

You are very lucky that he bet as much as he did in the first place given that he was OOP and with a weak kicker to his Ace against your initial raise....you do not see this too often against reasonable opposition.

Could have tried a very small bet on the River to give the sense that you were trying to steal eg, 20% of the pot. This may have induced him to come over the top but once again, you got more chips than you normally would have with this hand so it is really no big deal anyway.

What you really hope for here is 3 xK and 2 x8 showing with villain holding Pkt 8s!
