Kind of a weird subject, but I'm drunk, and curious about the theory behind it.
What I mean is when you sit down, and are in any position but the SB and BB (and button I think?) you cannot play unless you post a BB.

Why would you ever do this? Why not wait for the BB, and post the least amount without getting to see your cards?
I also remember hearing (from Dorkus, I think) that it's pretty much +EV to post in LP?

I personally never post it until the BB hits me, and I also wait until utg reaches me to leave a table...maybe that's just me bein a cheapo though

People do it cause they are raving to get into the games and give you their chippies. I used to do that until I payed the table BB and then I was BB on the next hand. I'm not cheap but I'm not going to pay twice to play in a game.
I wait for the BB. I look at it this way now; it gives you time to watch the table action. Since doing this my ring tables ROI has been at around a good 190%.

Generally ill wait. There are a few exceptions.

If im in a hurry, and i only want to play a small few hands (rare). OR this is the one that ill always post. If youve been on the waiting list for a while, and the table has an UBER donk on, generally i want to get in there before someone else breaks him. Only in no limit games mind.

Here is an exerpt of an article I read recently..so it isn't me who wrote this.

Waiting for the Big Blind: When you sit down at a Holdem table, many times you'll have the option of "waiting on the big blind" to get to you, or you can post a matching big blind and start playing immediately. This a good tell on how patient and online player will be. If he is not patient enough to wait on the big blind to get around to him, he might not be very patient about waiting on good starting hands. Expect him to be a loose player. The opposite holds true for players who do wait on the big blind. Either they are patient or cheap. Both are pretty good qualities to have if you are playing online poker. Cheap players, even when they are not especially skilled will tend to wait on better hands.

Not that I don't believe you (I don't), but you do realize that ROI is not commonly used to discuss results of a ring game?
In Fact, I think you just made this number up.
Hmmmm, 190% sounds like a big number let's use that.

Don't want to sound like I'm showing off or anything :), but my win rate since starting on PokerRoom cash games has been 57 Big Bets per 100 hands. So if I have to wait 6 hands before the BB gets to me, I would lose 3.4 big bets, or about 7 blinds. It only costs 1 to sit in. Easy choice, post the blind and get going straight away.

I will post hte BB to get in immidiately...quite frankly, i don't understand why you have to post (you don't in B&M games here) but i assume its to avoid playing 8 hands w/o a blind then changing tables...understandable. But don't read too much into my posting the blind immidiately. Everyone makes loose pf calls every now and then ... at its only 1 big blind...no big deal really. The ev of posting is so small that its almost irrelevant either way. The only time i don't post is if i'm UTG to start, or UTG+1 or +2. Otherwise i always post.

It's marginally +EV to post in the cutoff at a full ring table. It's -EV in any other case.

Don't ask me to prove it, though.

prove it :p

I'll take the -ev once to get into the game. You're missing out on hands 1-8 hands by waiting for hte bb. Thats anywhere from 1bb - .125 BBs per hand you play. I'll gladly post the big blind if i can pull an AA 2 hands later....especially if I know had i waited, that hand never would have come to me.

If someone waits for the BB, I often see it as an indicator they will be a tad conservative in their play.

I dont think there is anything wrong in the actual act of waiting for it, but personally I wouldnt.
