So i played a live tournament last night and im still rather kicking myself over what i did, so i want some pointer on where i went wrong, and what i could have done to win the pot or get out of it...

I get dealt pocket 10s
Blinds are 200/400

i raise to 1500

one caller

Flop = 9, 7. 3

he bets 1000
I raise to 5000
he calls

Turn = 3

he wants to bet, then opts to check (now heres where i made my mistake)
I bet 2500
He goes all in

I fold

I KNOW I KNOW thats terrible, i was crippled after that with only 5000 chips left and i never got back into it...

Should i have checked the turn and seen the river (which was a 10 by the way, filling me up)

Or should i have called his all in ( he had pocket queens, he was nice enough to show)

pointers please? i never want to make that mistake again, it was terrible and my worst play ever

Well you actually did the right thing at the time when you laid it down, because your 10s were beaten by his QQs, so congratulations on a good fold.

It is just a shame you weren't such a bad player as to say what the heck i'm pot committed, and called to suck out. lol.

It is unlucky you were not able to get back in as 5,000 chips still left you with a reasonable chance.

Should you have checked the turn?
Firstly that would have shown weakness, which is rarely good, and would probably lead to a dificult decision on the river depending on what he does.
Secondly you need to find out where you are in the hand.
If you thought he had 9, 7 or overcards then you usually need to bet.
You asked the question, he answered, you made the correct conclusion at the time.

However you say he went for chips, and you clearly thought he was strong, so much so that you folded to his raise.

So here is the key, you need to play it like chess. Think 2 moves ahead, what might happen if, and make your decisions accordingly.
In this case, ask yourself what you would do if he re-raises, and if the answer is fold, then don't waste the chips and take the free card.
(and also be thinking about possible river actions)
Obviously here your bingo card would have made the river decision easy for you.

Don't beat yourself up too much, you played well,
(on the day it just wasn't quite good enough or bad enough to take the hand down).

Pending the suits on the board I more than likely would not have played this hand any differently than you. I don't play live so I couldn't tell you anything about reads, but one thing that would matter in this case is what is your table image and what reads have you gotten from the other guy?

If you've been pretty aggressive then he may assume that you're just betting with overs and trying to scare him off.

If you've been weak-tight or passive he may think he can just scare you off the hand by putting you all-in.

this part really got me thinking... if i had done what you said, i probably wouldve won/gotten out of the pot...

i was in such a mindset that he had 2 overcards i never stopped and considered the possibility that he had a overpair... if i had stopped and asked MYSELF, the same question i asked him.. i wouldve got my answer without betting even...

I will try that in future, i cant help but feel i was overagressive and too close minded, i was almost sure that he was playing AK or AQ... but when i say almost sure, i never stopped to think about it, my mind was set without thinking about it, if you understand what i mean.. if i had sat back and really considered it.. i would have got my answer, the signs were there

Thanks for the post!

most people see me as a tight agressive player from what i hear...
I usually wait till i have a good hand and play it like the nuts, occasionally playing absolute bollocks hands and scaring people off...

I dont slow play anything except the absolute nuts with no outs..

Pleased you found it useful, thanks for the acknowledgement.

My image is as a slow player, as in I take a long time to act,
it might annoy some fast players, but it is accepted and respected by serious players.

Understand you perfectly, he called you with a big hand, has to be AK right,
usually it would be big Ace or pictures, even A9 or any pocket pair perhaps 9s,7s, or 3s.
How about this, it could have been suited 68 with a big draw on the flop.
There are so many things to consider.

How quickly would you have put your chips in on the river?
Would you have had the nuts on the river?

How bad would you have felt if he turned over pocket 3s for quads, lol, bet you didn't see that one comming.

Hollywood time wasting is inconsiderate but there is nothing wrong with taking your time (within reasonable consideration for others), and thinking strategically.

ok i figure you had just under 30BBs. this is a tricky stack size. 1st thing i see is the preflp raise. IMO 1500 is just too much. i think 1000 may have done the job. i dont know this for sure as ive not been at the table but think it may have been good. also the 3bet you make on the flop commits you to the pot. you got to ask what range of hands will call such a raise? and are you ahead of that range? you make it 5x his bet also why do you bet so much? he bet 1000 so a bet of 2500 to 3000 should be enough to get the info you need. i do agree to the 3bet as there are too many cards higher that ten that you dont want to see. but just dont bet so much. you dont really have a huge hand so try dont to build a huge pot.

You bet 5k on the flop(maybe too much after he called your overraise PF) and he called. At this point you might think you're in trouble. I might have checked the turn and let him win it with a bet or maybe he'd check, trying to get you to put more in on the river(which in hindsight would have given you a HUGE pot).

I think raising to 5k on the flop is a big mistake. 2.5k to 3k is a much better move to see where you are and it applies the necessary pressure. Once you have done the 5k raise on the flop you are committing yourself on the turn if you bet again. The pot is now 13.5k and you only have 7k left. TT is not a had you want to really commit yourself with. Also once he calls betting 2k on the turn is pointless. There are no hands that call the 5k on the flop and fold to 2k on the turn. Your only moves on the turn are check or all in if you think you are good. Check being the best option in this case as again not many hands that can call the 5k on the flop can fold to your half pot all in on the turn.

But hey... We all make these mistakes and we will continue to make them. Is just important we acknowledge them and try and not make them again.

It's a nice laydown, but it's just not necessary to put money in on the turn. You may as well wait until the river and hope there's either a 10 to give you the best hand or an ace to scare him from betting and allowing you to bluff or check it down.
