I'm new to real money poker, as a student it's not something I can comfortably invest my student loan on. So I decided to deposit £10 on and try to build a bankroll playing tiny cash games. I'm currently up to £20 but i'm nervous that with only 10 buyins i am at risk of a downswing causing me to lose this quickly. Therefore does anyone have any tips for reducing variance at micro stakes, and of course any other advice for beating this game type is welcome.

Thanks

First off good for you for not being willing to invest loan money into it to start...wise financial decision definitely.

Sure you might lose it but it's a small amount to risk so take the $20 risk. If you busto you can try again no sweat.

That said, I'd say stick to full ring cash games (avoid heads up and 6 max). If you want to try MTTs or SNGs many sites (esp pokerstars) have super low buy in tourneys (like 10 cents) so if you wanna really keep the $20 roll safe, play some really small buy in tourneys and grind up. But if set on cash games stick to full ring.

Thanks, I'm an Economics Student so bankroll management should be my strongsuit.

Cam you elaborate on why you'd avoid 6max as that's what I've been currently playing. Didn't really consider there to be much of a difference although I assume it's tighter as the blinds go round slower???

And it's not that I'm worried about losing the £20 for it's numerical value, it's that I am just using this money to try to improve my game and don't really want to bust it and have to put more money on the site.

Like people said, play full ring. Try to play tight. Nothing fancy. Stick to one table (i.e., no multi-tabling). Then 10 buy-ins should be enough to handle the negative variance.

Hello Matt,
so first things first - good pieces of advice mentioned above, you better play the fullring games, avoid 6-max.
Why?
In 6-max games, you are forced to open more widely as the blinds go faster and thus there is more variance accompanying these games.

I am in a similar situation, and I recently asked for a stake to reduce the variance.
Keep up the grind! Good luck

I would advise Knockout tournaments.

They are represented in most major poker rooms and are very popular.

Opportunity to knock out an opponent and get extra money for it.

To win the knockout, you need to adhere to the completely standard tactics of playing poker. That is, play cards.
The main thing is not to forget that this is a tournament with two prize funds.

If you want to take it seriuos, you should consider getting a HUD. Reading statistics should be your strongsuit, too, I assume. You can start with free poker Database.

I played 6-Max cash first, then got to tournaments and now I finally found my place at full ring cash games. Games are quite slow so you can build up your game wisely and there is simply much less of stress factor. Recommending it to everyone.

You could always play 0.25 sng. Or if you do prefer cash games maybe try buying in for the minimum and shorten your game time a little.

A great way for a beginner to start playing in the cash game is for betting 0.01 to 0.02 cents, good luck with the game and raising the bankroll!

You wrote that it is not costly for you 20 euros to play. Then you will continue to play. Adhere to the recommendations of poker stars in the game for cash. Find the articles and strictly follow the written act, even if you do not immediately get to be in profit. I personally do not play cash. Only in tournaments. I'm more comfortable playing there.

Play full ring. Play tight. Choose low variance lines. Log off if you're running bad and/or if you feel tilt coming on.

If pokerstars offers freeroll tournaments that is another inexpensive way to try to build your roll.

When playing for small stakes, whenever I have a downswing, I try and replenish my bankroll with freerolls before continuing to risk any more.

I would advise you to read the book - Nathan "Blackrain79" Williams - "Crushing the Microstakes." Just for this limit

Cache games are very easy to lose bankroll in a matter of minutes, so if you are afraid of this, my advice is to play micro tournaments and sit and go, there at least so fast you will not lose

I too studied Economics - long before you were walking, or even crawling, on this earth.
Keeping an eye on bankroll management is a critical part of a long-term successful career in poker.
Full ring games give you the proper odds and expectations represented in most poker strategy systems. Pots can grow larger, allowing you to pick and choose your hands more selectively. Early, middle, and late strategies vary significantly with full-ring games. You can then enter pots at the right time, knowing the long-run expectations for various hands.
Good luck with your studies and your game.

Variance will always happen. Decide however if you want to improve or just build a bankroll. IF you want to improve you will have to also call sometimes with 50% or all in bluffs etc. Else just play ABC and also set mine...

Be careful with your student loan, man. It's always better to take a small loan an go with it. There's always an opportunity to take one within a day. Check this site, for example, newmexico-paydayloans.com. It's way more convenient to get a financial aid from a payday loan agency than from a bank. And you can the needed $100 for the lowest available rate.

Best advice i can give is to see the money you deposited as money
thats NOT available to you. Its not money you can use to buy food and other stuff.
View them as lost money :D

When you do that, you will be able to play without fear of "loosing money"
and will be able to play correct, and increase your chance of winning more.

Another move is to withdraw the 10£ you deposited and play "free" for the
other 10£ :D

My advice Is avoid the 6 max, heads up you can play, that's optional, play many times from position, even with not so good cards, 85s, J9s A5o extc...
Button play advised try to read your oponnents at your table, dont bluff you arent ready for it

I’d say 10 buy ins is enough on a cash game the chances of busting on 10 different tables without making at very least one buy in back is rather slim to me as long as u stick to one table play tight and no when to walk away you’ll be fine mate
