PLO cash: Bankroll management?

Good morning CC'ers.

Recently I have found myself with much less time to play poker with other things going on in life and busy at work. So I am looking to move away from tournaments and sngs to start playing cash games so I can play for as little or long as I like.

For NLHE I am looking at sticking to a 30BI rule for my BRM but I also enjoy PLO and have not quite grasped BRM for the 4 card game. I understand that with the increased variance and more swingy nature of PLO that I would need a deeper roll right?

Does anyone have any advice on how many BIs for a recreational player would be optimal for PLO cash? I would be looking at playing no more than 2 tables to start maybe 3 and would play $2 PLO / $2 NL (not at the same time though, would focus on NL one week and PLO the next etc).

Hi Ian,

I’ve only recently started playing PLO more seriously, so I do have an opinion but not much experience to back it up yet.

Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt recommends 100BIs. That’s, of course, extremely conservative and he is playing professionally and high stakes, so his income and livelihood depend on prudent BRM.

Personally, I think, your BR requirements depend on your very subjective risk tolerance profile and your financial situation. So if you’re loading and don’t break a sweat about reloading at the micros then you can be aggressive and play with 20 or 30 BI.

As for myself I have a high risk tolerance at the micros because it’s not that much money to reload 30 or 40 bucks. I would however prefer to avoid having to. It’s also a bad habit that I would like to drop before moving to higher stakes where is becomes more costly.

In a nutshell, I’ve started playing 2 PLO with a very small BR but will increase my BR requirements the higher the stakes get, starting with 20BIs for 5PLO and adding 10BIs for every stake I move up.

5 PLO = 20 BI = $100
10 PLO = 30 BI = $300
25 PLO = 40 BI = $1.000
and so forth...

I will also only 1-table when first moving up and drop down in stakes as soon as I lose 3 BIs. Only I have made a number of extra BIs will I increase the number of tables.

This way I can move up stakes quickly (I hope) while becoming more BR protective as I progress.

Hope this helps. Just a few thoughts. In the end it’s up to your personal risk tolerance and level of ambition.

Good evening!
I think that the bankroll management strategy is the same for any cash game - the minimum bankroll is 50 bi for the working limit (preferably 75-100 bi). The higher the limit, the deeper your bankroll should be.
