How long does a cold streak usually last? I feel like i have been having the worst luck lately and been going card dead..and when i have good whole cards the flop betrays me!......in addition what is the best strategy for playing short stacked in no limit? is A7 clubs an all in hand?

Last if i am opened ended on the straight and flush draw is it profitable to call any bet everytime?

let me add that i play the $100-$300 no limit tables...usually start with 100 to 180. i had some success with it early but lately things have been bleek.

Also do you guys push all in pre flop with jj on a short stack in this situation considering some of the calling stations the casino has?

If you're an amatuer, what are you doing playing $300 tables? I'm assuming you play mostly live? I love live. There's nothing like being able to look an opponent in the eye. Some of the disadvantages of live play are
1) The huge rake
2) Toking the dealer
3) They can see you too
4) You're pretty much forced to play at limits too high for amatuers to afford
4) Very hard to plug leaks in your game

You may be experiencing the down side of variance, or you may need to work on your game. Probably a bit of both. Software like PokerTracker or Poker Office allow you to analize your on-line play and plug some leaks. If you don't already have it, get it. "Til then, any advice you get from such general questions will do little good.

Unless you're rolling in cash, I think the best advice you could possibly be given right now is:

Get out of the casino.

Either go find a pub / bar league and work on your game there, or start playing online for small stakes. Read a few poker books as well, you'll be surprised how quickly they can improve your game.

Anywho, the major point is you don't want to be playing for $300 buyins when you're a self-confessed 'extreme amateur' - someone will take your money from you, and it's probably not the best environment to learn in.

Try playing some freerolls. This will help you with betting strategies, hand value and pre-flop raising. The first 45 mins or so is usually littered with newbies and donkies....after that, the majority of the people left are somewhat decent players. You can get good practice with the average players and it won't cost you an arm and a leg to do it!

"How long does a cold streak usually last?"

Lasts for months at a time for me.

"in addition what is the best strategy for playing short stacked in no limit? is A7 clubs an all in hand?"

Short stacked in tournaments? What matters most is your M, not your stack compared to the size of the other stacks at the table. If you're not familiar with M read HoH Volume 2. When you push all in preflop with a low M, this is what you want to look for. You want to be the first player in the pot, you want to have pretty good position, you want to attack medium sized stacks not big or small stacks. A7 suited in late position is a very good hand you should definetly shove.

People have different opinions about this - personally I found the Harrington on Hold 'em series invaluable, but I play a lot more sit 'n go's and tournaments than I do cash games, and they're very much directed at tournament play.

Phil Gordon's Little Green Book is fantastic as well - again, it's got some tournament-specific content, but you can apply a lot of the lessons to tournament and ring games.

Be a little wary when you're applying the advice from Super System - I've got volume one, not volume two, but I understand the hold 'em section hasn't changed substantially.

Anywho, the first thing to remember is that Super System isn't a low-stakes text: particularly in the hold 'em section, Doyle is talking about playing a lot higher than $300 buy-ins. Consequently, a lot of the plays are geared towards that game.

When he talks about moving in on an opponent and putting pressure on them, for example, he's talking about pots that contain enough to buy a new car or pay a mortgage for three months, not pots that'll probably only buy you a cab fare home.

Also, if the hold 'em section of Super System 2 is indeed much the same to Super System 1, then the typical opponents he's talking about are much fewer and farther between these days. Doyle talks about playing a lot of rocks and weak-tight players, and he certainly expected to be one of the few aggressive players at the table. That's often not the case these days.

He was just poking a little fun, don't take it personally or anything.
The prior recommended books are amazing, and you should definitely take a look into purchasing a few of them.
There are also tons of great threads about different poker strategy books. Just take your time around the forums to learn from all of the great minds around here. I have a feeling you will fit in very well.

Assuming you play at casinos, there are a couple of things you can do. First off, realize that many *most* people that go there are there to gamble. Generally speaking, Joe Smith and his Wife don't make the drive there to sit around waiting for pocket aces. So what you have to do is tighten up and value bet them to death. You can get good practice for these games by playing very very very small stakes online. 0.05/0.10nl and 0.10/0.25nl is very similar to 1/2 NL Live.

My suggestion would be to play a lot of micro stakes online and go from there. It's far cheaper and you'll see so many more hands that it will make the learning process much faster.
