Hi,

Usually when playin online i like to over bet the pot when there are draws on the board after the flop, because of the amount of people online who seemingly will chase ANY kind of draw i seem to get more success totally jamming the pot when i hit and don't want any else to draw out on me.

My question is/are

1. I dont have a great understanding of implied odds, i dont use them too much because i see it as a lot of guess work, was always sayin to myself 'i think i could get another 50c on the turn if i hit' then hitting and not getting any extra, making my thought process on the flop bad. Does overbetting the pot give any sort of odds at all??

2. Is it worth betting 3/4s of the pot to not give someone odds but maybe still entice a bad call from the fishers?? In my eyes it isnt because (and this isnt an online pokers rigged rant) draws ALWAYS hit online!! and it doesnt seem worth it to bet 3/4s into someone who u know is on a draw and who will most probably hit said draw!

Any advice would be appreciated, cheers

You want to make them make a mistake which would be to call with improper odds. Now if you think they will call a higher bet then by all means, make a larger bet which will meana larger mistake. One thing to watch out for is pot commitment if they are not on a draw, say you have TPTK and they have a set. They will probably get all your money now if a cooler card doesnt come since it seems you are creating large pots.

To think about implied odds thinks about it in the other direction. If you bet and get called by what you think is a draw and that draw card comes how much more will you give them? You are the one that knows the actual implied odds you are giving them. This is much easier with flush draws than straights since it is more clear when the draw hits. Overbetting the pot would really just increase implied odds(although decrease expressed odds) because with the rising pot they will probably get more money if they hit. Say a pot is 100 and you bet 150. As long as both of you have a sufficient amount of money they can expect to be getting a bigger portion of that than if you bet 75 since the pot will be 400 instead of 250 after on the turn.

The first thing you have to do is understand that not all draws hit and over the long run they will hit as often as they should. Beleiving that 100% of draws hit makes you play sub optimally. It only seems all hit because when they dont you dont see the cards.

like he said, you have to worry about commiting yourself to the pot... if you think hes on a draw and overbet the flop and the turn card, now if the turn and river cards come blank blank, you now check, then he bets a large ammount and your forced to call because so much is in already in because of the large bets and you think hes on a draw and then you get ass raped by a set or something.... in conclusion i would only overbet when theres draws out there and you have no worse then 2 pair, just make sure if its a safe card on the turn, you really stick in a huge bet, also dont be afraid of folding 2 pair if they raise on ur big bet on the turn, most of the time it will be beat, if they outflopped u with set over set, or u have top 2 and they have bottom set, etc, its a cooler and not much u can really do... in the long run you wont make much by overbetting TPTK or overpairs on a dangerous flop, youll just simply give your oppenent great implied odds to chase there outs as well as give them a no brainer decision to slowplay a strong hand like a set and its basically lose lose.
