My standard opening raise size is 3x in a 6-max cash game. I'll do this in all positions: UTG, MP, CO, BTN, SB. This means at 2NL, I will always raise to $0.06 in an unopened pot.

But I've seen a lot of 6-max players vary their opening sizes according to position.
BTN: they raise to 2.5x
MP, CO, SB: they raise to 3x
UTG: they raise to 4x
This means at 2NL, they will raise to $0.08 UTG, $0.06 in MP, CO, SB and $0.05 on BTN.

Is it better for me to adjust my opening raise sizes according to position? Or will the 3x strategy work fine? What do you recommend?

Tbh... its more of a personal preference. Whether its correct or not comes down more to consistency than anything else.

I personally open 3x from all positions except the btn where I open 2.5x. This is because I steal very wide from this position and it has to be successful less often to be profitable, there are also fewer players to get through.

I have experiment with 4xing UTG and didn't really find much of a difference. The reason behind this is because your range is tighter in this position, so you bloat the boat more with your strongest range, and also there are more people to act behind so you make it more likely that you will be facing a HU pot.

As I said though, its more down to what prefer doing and as long as you do it the same every time, it doesnt matter so much (within reason).

If you were to raise different sizes by hand strength however this would be a mistake.

the player with a bad hand would be difficult to put even 3bet, so why risk a larger sum when you open a failed flop for you?

I open 2x on the BTN and 2.5x everywhere else.

However on particularly fishy tables I have changed my strategy a little. I'll start opening hands based on their strength. I would 2x raise small pockets and suited connectors whereas I would 3.5x raise premium hands. Obviously the table really has to be a VERY fishy one for you to do this because otherwise the regs will exploit you or you will lose value by not getting 3 bet on your premium hands.

They would have to be terrible to not notice that. You should never ever EVER set your raise size depending on your hand strength. Keep it consistent.

I used to believe that as well but I am talking about uber fish who don't give a damn. And since these fish don't play multi tables so its not actually going to be easy for them to notice that since I only open so many hands on 1 table in a session.

When you start playing at the higher levels, opening sizes have a whole lot to do with your opponents frequencies and a whole lot less to do with position.

I think it all depends on your comfort zone. Many players keep a consistent opening size (can vary from position to position, but always consistent) as a standard. It makes you hard to read. If you see the table is clueless, size according to what you want to happen. You can also vary sizes if you see people are paying attention, to set up an image which you can later use, but IMO this is more useful in live games, as the low stakes I play on the net people are not paying attention.
