Or forgot the tantra "small hand, small pot" . . .

Got sucked out on the river twice - big.

On the button. $1 $2 game at casino. Playing tight aggressive. Stack of $250; villian had $750 or so.

Second time I was in late position (button) with AhQh. Loose aggressive (good player) has been raising a lot pre-flop. I've 3-bet a couple times but decided to Smooth Call this time his preflop raise. Flop comes Qd4d8s (giving me top pair/top kicker). He bets out $20, I raise to $80 or so. He thinks and then pushes all-in (putting me all-in for remaining $150 or so). I KNOW I have him beat and snap-call. He turns over Ad7d (flush draw) to my top pair. Turn is a blank then on the River, I hear an audible "sigh" from the rest of the table as a diamond hits!

I realize I can't win every hand and could have 3-bet his preflop raise but . . .

I took a 15 minute walk to cool-down after that one.

Thoughts??

maybe its a online thing but why are raising TPTK vs an agg player?

if its to induce semi bluff shoves then ok.. but you're mad he 'sucked out' on you (FD's don't count imo) so that can't be it.

3betting is only ok if he flats a lot OOP, if he 4bet/folds then obv flat is the best line.

don't lose your stack with TPTK.. raise flop smaller, dunno why he thought he had FE there though.. seems like a spewy shove.

preflop raise size?

I don't think preflop is the problem here.

Over all, play was fine. It sounds like you had a good read on the guy. Maybe flat the flop and get it in on the turn if no flush. You pick up fold equity if he misses and save money if he hits. Worse case scenario is you get bluffed out of a smallish pot.

Against an aggressive player, top pair top kicker is definitely good enough for stacking off. You are being too result dependent here. You should congratulate yourself for getting it in being the favourite to win against his flush draw!

My only comment is that on the flop you can raise less - on that flop there wasn't many draws that might outdraw you, so chances are he didn't have a great draw that can come back over the top. By you raising to $80 he knows you are not bluffing, and a push all-in from him can't really make you fold, so he won't push with a bad draw.

However, if you raised to just $55 or $60, sometimes he might even push all with TJ for a gutshot, because he thinks you are more likely to fold there. With AQ you want him to do something bad like pushing all in with a gutshot :)
