Okay so curious, how big of a sample size do I need before moving up from 2nl to 5nl?

Normally I know it's anywhere from 20k+, but I only single table, and I don't use a HUD.

I write all my stats down though (Buy in, cash out, hands played, % of hands played etc).

At the moment since I've actually tried to grind properly I've only got a few thousand hand sample (like 5 days worth of playing at a few hours a day roughly).

2NL bores me. Wether I run bad or not I can't seem to discipline myself because it is only $2, but I'm slowly learning to appreciate the lessons I learn for cheap, which is making me appreciate this grind.

For someone who only single tables, and witohut a hud, who plays TAG, how much BR would I need as well? Still 100BI? I'm literally running up my last $20 on stars before I need to redeposit if I lose it all, its a fun little challenge I've set myself. 10BI isn't enough, but I've only had 1 losing session so far in the past 5 days and am effectively up 2 BI, I am expecting a swing to hit me like a brick eventually but I' am curious to see how far I go.

thanks!

20-30BI is good for micros. If you think you have a good edge over the players, 25 should be sufficient. I prefer 50 for 50NL and 100NL+. Haven't been following that lately due to a withdrawal and downswing though haha. With 10BI, even if you are a strong player, it's very likely you will go broke.

Imo I think hand samples are overrated. Just keep grinding until you get 25BI or whatever you're comfortable with for the next stake, take a shot, and move back down if you lose a certain amount. I don't recommend single tabling. I think you'll get bored very fast, don't learn too fast, and may feel like you have to "win" the pots. Giving up because you miss every board/get crappy board textures to c-bet or barrel as the PFR, and getting sucked out on even on 10 tables is pretty annoying.

The only reason I single table is because I struggle to learn with multiple tables open. I struggle to see how someone does learn with multiple tables open struggling to follow the action

Not even 2 tables? Volume is key when moving up the stakes so if i were you i would give it a try at least. Press ctrl+9 so that you can see both tables completely and you do not miss any action.

^ This.

If you have the discipline for good BRM, then hand samples don't matter. Take shots / move up when the roll supports it.

I would suggest to try to get comfortable playing 2 tables, and eventually 3 or 4. Helps with the boredom.
Also, getting a tracker (PT4 or HM2) and using a HUD is invaluable.

This'll do more to make you move up in stakes than anything else, really.

Thanks guys! Going to buy a HUD once I win enough from Poker to do so! that's the plan anyway. If I want the HUD, I gotta work for it!

Appreciate the advice guys! I'll definately use sample size as a guide when I get higher up in stakes. I eventually wish to grind 200NL as a secondary income. I feel it's doable but it is a long journey!

Good luck! It's going to be a very long journey with many, many ups and downs. Trust me :). And the downs are really going to suck.

Yeah it is! And yeah the swings do suck! I used to play 25NL regularly and lost my bankroll on that. Although that was PLO and I was way fishier back then aha.

I've fallen in love with 8game as well, I rarely have a losing session with that, but thats another beast entirely so I just avoid that for now.

move up by only doing 2 tables and then get better, actually only 1 but go to 2 pretty fast and move up and when youre comfortable and have the roll dont be afraid to move up. i hope this helps.

This is Holdem Managers Cloud (Beta). It is currently free. It currently only supports cash games.

I think it only lets you keep track up to 100,000 hands (I may be wrong on that - I can't remember) But even so you can purge the hands after.

I definitely recommend using it to get use to HUD's and so you can be using a HUD before you bite the bullet and buy one.
It works great.

and don't forget FREE :p

You legend! I won't be hitting 100k hands anytime soon so that'll be plenty for now :) And I don't have the BR for online tournaments either. I kind of want to avoid anything less then $20 online for tournaments. SO that's a huge bankroll.
